2016 IAAF U20 Championships – Day 2 morning session summary

WOMEN’S SHOT PUT qualifying

As she did in the discus yesterday, Elena Bruckner (Valley Christian, San Jose, CA) got the auto qualifier on her first throw (50-10.25).  Alyssa Wilson (Monsignor Donovan, Toms River, NJ) was sitting in 13th after two throws and ran the risk of not advancing.  She threw 50-05.25 on her final throw to advance 7th overall.  Jessica Molina (Pleasantville, NJ), representing Ecuador, threw 46-00 and finished in 17th.

MEN’S 110m HURDLES Round 1

As expected, no issues for the U.S. hurdlers, with Amere Lattin (U. of Houston) and Marcus Krah (Hillside, Durham, NC).  Both won their heats, with Lattin at 13.46 and Krah at 13.48, the second- and third-fastest qualifiers.  Jamaican Damion Thomas, who attends Northeast HS in Oakland, FL, ran 13.48 in winning his heat.

WOMEN'S 400m HURDLES Round 1

Anna Cockrell (Providence Day, Charlotte, NC) had an easy time of it, winning her heat in 56.85 – the leading time of the day – and advancing to the semis.  Brandee Johnson (Nansemond River, Suffolk, VA) started strong but faltered halfway through the race, seemingly easing up at the end of the race only to have her automatic (top 4) spot taken away.  Johnson, the bronze medalist in the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships, would not advance.

MEN’S TRIPLE JUMP qualifying

Both Americans ran the risk of not qualifying, saving the best for their third and final qualifying jumps. Armani Wallace (Florida State) jumped 52-07.5 and Charles Brown (Texas Tech) 52-04.75 to advance to tomorrow’s final.  Wallace was just shy of his personal best of 52-10.75.  The leaders, both qualifying automatically, were the Cubans Cristian Napoles (54-2.75), the 2015 IAAF World Youth Champion, and Lazaro Martinez (54.01.25) – the 2014 IAAF World Junior Champion.

MEN'S 400m Round 1

Will London (Baylor – 47.23) and Kahmari Montgomery (Missouri – 46.36) easily advanced to the next round.  Also qualifying were Jamal Walton (Everglades, Miami, FL/CAYMAN ISLANDS – 46.83) and Myles Banfield (Albany U/CANADA - 46.77)

WOMEN'S 100m Round 1

Favorite Candace Hill (Asics) won easily as expected, running 11.43.  Celera Barnes (St. Bonaventure, Ventura, CA) was second in her heat (11.51) and advanced as well.  Some significant non-Americans included Poland’s Ewa Swoboda (11.10w), the 2015 European Junior champ,  and Imani-Lara Lansiquot (Great Britain – 11.17).

MEN'S DECATHLON – DAY 2 - morning

Cale Wagner matched or was close to his PRs, but fell a little further off his Juniors pace (123 pts, total) in the first three events of the final day: the hurdles, discus and pole vault.  With the discus being one of his weakest events (he was 19th of 23), he slipped to 12th overall after eight events.
