Top national-class marks

  • 1:34.29 meet record (#4 national performance all-time) girls’ 4x200m relay by Team Florida – which was the US#1 St. Thomas Aquinas FL quartet of Khalifa St. Fort, Diamond Spaulding, Kendell Ellis and Krystal Sparling.  Only STA this year (twice) and former HSR-holder Long Beach Poly (1:33.87 in 2004) have ever gone faster.  STA held off a terrific charge from the Mikiah Brisco-anchored Team Louisiana in 2nd at 1:35.33, with Missouri 3rd at 1:36.80.
  • US#1 (#8 all-time) 193-4 girls’ hammer throw by Haley Showalter (Valor Christian, CO junior), winning by more than 27 feet over runner-up Kelli Thomas (Luella, GA senior) at 166-0.
  • US#1 (#10 all-time) 5,311-point girls’ heptathlon by Ashlee Miller (Hamilton, AZ senior), the second best in meet history.  She hurdled 14.23(-1.3w) for 2nd, then won the high jump in a multis best of 5-8.  She was 2nd in the shot with a big PR of 36-1.25, then 3rd in the 200 at 25.37(-1.3w) to close the 1st day leading at 3,285.  A winning 19-0.5(-0.7w) long jump put it almost out of reach, and she finished with a 110-5 jav (6th) and a 2:30.11 800 (also 6th).
  • US#2 (#15 all-time) 5,258-point girls’ heptathlon by Tiana Bonds (Centennial, NV senior) for 2nd.  She hurdled a winning 13.75(-0.5w) hept PR to start, then was 2nd in the HJ at 5-5.  She was 10th in the SP with a PR 30-11.75, then ruled the 200 at 24.40(+0.6w) to finish day 1 in 2nd at 3,245.  A sub-par LJ at 17-4.75w(+2.5) in 10th started day 2, but she rallied for a PR 113-3 jav (3rd) and PR 2:21.16 800 (also 3rd) to finish with a 259-point PR.  Maya Neal (Neuqua Valley, IL junior) at 4,861, Jordan Fields (Creekside, FL soph) at 4,782 and Kaylee Hinton (Rockwall, TX junior) at 4,768 were the next three.
  • 7:34.57 boys’ 4x800 relay by Team Missouri, with sub-1:50 performer Charles Jones, Jr. anchoring to get the win over a tough Nevada squad at 7:35.07.  Arizona topped Utah for 3rd, 7:41.37 to 7:42.98.
  • 1:24.57 boys’ 4x200 relay by Team Louisiana, nipping Texas at 1:24.64.  Well back in 3rd was Missouri ‘B’ at 1:26.84.
More fine champions
  • 6,392-point boys’ decathlon by Zach Bornstein (Oaks Christian, CA senior), coming from behind in the 1,500 to secure the overall win after a no-height due to a hamstring injury in the pole vault.  Bornstein started with an 11.32(+0.2w) in the 100 for 2nd and a 21-6(+0.0w) LJ for 3rd.  Then he dominated the shot at 49-10 to start building his lead, was 7th in the HJ at 5-11.5, then finished off Day 1 at 3,762 with a winning 49.95 400.  In day 2, he was 2nd in the 110H with 15.16(-1.5w), then ruled the DT at 155-4.  Bornstein was still in 2nd after the PV NH, then still took 3rd in the JT at 139-2 while hobbled.  He was 8th in the 1,500 at 5:09.32.
  • 6,389-point boys’ decathlon for Wyatt French (Rockwall Heritage Christian, TX senior) in 2nd, just getting edged after Bornstein outkicked him in the 1,500.  He ran an 11.44(+0.4w) 100, jumped 21-5.5(+1.9w), threw 40-6.25, jumped 6-2 and ran 51.61 to reside in 4th after Day 1.  He hurdled 15.49(-0.3w), threw 113-3, vaulted 12-10.75 and threw 127-9 to lead after 9 events, despite no wins.  His 1,500 was 5:14.06.  Jerrick Powell (Christian Brothers College, MO junior) at 6,118, Trevor Bursach (Lehi, UT senior) at 6,116 and Luke Littlefield (Dallas First Baptist, TX soph) at 6,056 rounded out the top 5.
  • 57.72 girls’ 4x100m shuttle hurdle relay by Team Texas, topping Missouri at 58.58.
  • 6:19.04 boys’ 2,000m steeplechase by Alexander Heffelfinger (East Mountain, NM soph) with Utah steeplers Braedin Butler (Weber senior) at 6:22.10 and Tanner Dupaix (Westlake senior) at 6:25.58 following.
  • 7:33.09 girls’ 2,000m steeplechase by Carisma Lovato (Valencia, NM junior), finishing well ahead of Eldorado, NM senior twin sisters Cassey and Crissey Ambert at 8:16.48 and 8:16.66.
  • 5,343 girls’ decathlon by Morgan Griffiths (St. Charles West, MO junior), topping Morgan Hartsell (Wolfforth Frenship, TX senior) at 5,243 and Sydney Madrid (Marana, AZ senior) at 5,173.
