NSAF On-Site: Recapping the weekend’s top performances at the Youth Olympic Trials

Leading Highlights

  • US#1 168-2 girls’ javelin (500g) by the NSAF Kultan Keihas Project Javelin’s Emma Fitzgerald (Thayer Academy, MA soph), winning by more than 10 feet.  The next four U.S. placers, all Project athletes, were Katelyn Gochenour (Marian, NE soph) in 4th at 155-10, Tairyn Montgomery (Redondo Union, CA soph) in 6th at 152-9, Chrissy Glasmann (Park City, UT junior) in 7th at 151-6, and Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, MO soph) in 8th at 125-7.
  • US#2 (all-conditions) 41-6.5w (+3.3) girls’ triple jump by NSAF Project Triple Jumper Chinne Okoronkwo (Mountlake Terrace, WA soph), ahead of Asa Garcia (Texas City, TX junior) US#2 40-11.75 (+1.7w) in 2nd and Kimani Rushing (Hallendale, FL junior) 39-8 (+1.1w) in 3rd.  Okoronkwo had already taken 3rd in the LJ at US#5 18-11.25 (+0.1w).
  • US#1 20.89 boys’ 200m dash (+1.3w) for Noah Lyles (TC Williams, VA soph), holding off 100 champ Amir Rasul (Miami Columbus, FL soph) US#3 21.12 and with 400 champ Andrew James (Westminster Acad., FL junior) 21.50 a strong 3rd.  Lyles was just .11 off the national soph class record (Brendan Christian, 20.78, 2000).
  • US#1 3:51.92 boys’ 1,500m run for Grant Fisher (Grand Blanc, MI junior), winning by more than five seconds over two Canadian runners.  He was the only U.S. finisher.
  • US#1 207-8 hammer (3kg), US#8 153-5 discus girls’ throws double by Haley Showalter (Valor Christian, CO junior).  In the hammer, Throw 1 Deep’s Kamryn Brinson (Marist, GA soph) is next U.S. finisher in 3rd at 184-9 and T1D teammate Sabrina Gaitan (Sprayberry, GA soph) – representing Guatemala, was 4th with 180-10.  In the discus, Phoebe Gustely (Monarch, FL junior) was 2nd in US#12 146-6 and Leena Morris (Etowah, GA junior) 3rd at 136-0.
  • US#1 4:36.56 girls’ 1,500 by Malia Ellington (Davidson, NC junior), with Paige Duca (Sacred Heart, NY junior) the next U.S. finisher in 3rd at US#2 4:38.74 – just a quarter-second behind Madeleine Sumner of Canada.  Ellington was also 3rd in the 3k.
  • US#1 7:17.09 girls’ 2k steeplechase by Paige Duca (Sacred Heart, NY junior) for 4th, behind champ Hegron Alondra of Puerto Rico and two others.  Duca had already taken 3rd in the 1,500.
  • US#2 1:51.53 boys’ 800 for Myles Marshall (Kingwood, TX junior), nipping Jesus Tonatiu Lopez, Jr. of Mexico by .03.  He was the only U.S. entrant in the field.
  • US#3 19-2.75 (+0.0w) girls’ long jump by Rhesa Foster (Clovis North, CA soph) for 2nd behind Magali Roche of Canada.  US#5 18-11.25 (+0.1w) for NSAF Project Triple Jump’s Chinne Okoronkwo (Mountlake Terrace, WA soph) in 3rd and US#6 18-10.5 (+0.3w) by Taylor DeLoach (St. Vincent’s Acad., GA soph) in 4th.  Foster was also 2nd in the 100H.
  • US#4 10.47 boys’ 100m dash by Amir Rasul (Miami Columbus, FL soph) in his prelim, qualifying first by nearly half a second, followed by a 10.63 (+0.0w) final.  Jeffrey Uzzell (Eagles Landing Christian, GA frosh) at 10.86 and Chandler Nichols (Chandler Co., GA soph) at 10.88 were 2nd and 3rd.
  • *US#4 (*all-conditions) 23.76w (+2.6) girls’ 200m dash for Brandee’ Johnson (Nansemond River, VA soph), ahead of Erin Ford (Royal Palm Beach, FL junior) *US#8 (a-c) 24.02 and Janie O’Connor (Zachary, LA frosh) 24.24.  U.S. took top 5 spots.  Johnson had just finished 6th in the 400H.
  • US#5 5-10.5 girls’ high jump by Janae Moffitt (Oak Hill, IN junior) for 2nd, behind champ Ximena Esquivel, Jr. of Mexico.  Nicole Green (Ponte Verda, FL junior) was the next U.S. placer in 5th with 5-8.
  • US#6 54.67 girls’ 400m dash by Brittny Ellis (Warren Twp, IL junior) in 2nd, behind champ Kyra Constantine of Canada. 
More top US victories, national leaders (youth hurdles and more throws) and top finishes
  • US#1 13.73 (-0.1w) boys’ 110m hurdles (36”) by Amere Lattin (Fort Bend Marshall, TX junior), winning by nearly half a second.  Lattin was also 5th in the 400H.
  • US#1 53.32 boys’ 400m hurdles (33”) by Rai Benjamin (Mt. Vernon, NY junior), beating athletes from four other countries.  110 hurdle champ Amere Lattin (Fort Bend Marshall, TX junior) was the 2nd U.S. finisher in 5th at 54.72.
  • US#1 208-5 boys’ hammer throw (5kg) by Throw 1 Deep’s Kenneth Brinson, Jr. (Marist, GA junior), holding off runner-up Tyler Merkley (Los Osos, CA junior) 205-2, as they were more than 15 feet ahead of the rest of the field. 
  • US#1 13.75 (1.6w) girls’ 100m hurdles (30”) by Brittley Humphrey (Hoover, AL soph) for 2nd behind Alexandra Aitken of Canada.  Rhesa Foster (Clovis North, CA soph) was 3rd in 13.87 and Kimani Rushing (Hallendale, FL soph) 4th in 14.07.  Humphrey was also 7th in the 400H.
  • US#14 2:12.96 girls’ 800m run for Mikaela Smith (Clovis North, CA junior), beating runners from three other countries.  She was the only U.S. entrant in the field.
  • 48.25 boys’ 400m dash for Andrew James (Westminster Acad., FL junior), the only U.S. finisher, just off his 48.13 PR.
  • 6-4.75 boys’ high jump by Robert Dunning (Kennesaw Mtn., GA junior), beating Alex McCord (Warwick, PA junior) 6-2.75.  Dunning was also 6th in the 110H and 7th in the 400H.
  • US#7 10:10.68 girls’ 3k run by Valerie Wierenga (Grandville, MI soph) for 2nd, behind champ Claire Smith of Canada.
  • 11.92w (+2.7) girls’ 100 by Janie O’Connor (Zachary, LA frosh) for 2nd behind champ Cecila Tamayo, Jr. of Mexico.
  • 47-5.25 girls’ shot put (3kg) by Leena Morris (Etowah, GA junior) for 3rd behind champ Maria Fernandez Orozco Jr. of Mexico.
  • 8:41.22 boys’ 3,000m run by Miler Haller (Edmonds Way, WA junior) for 3rd behind champ Jeremiah Ort of Canada.
  • 54-5.25 boys’ shot put (3kg) by Throw 1 Deep’s Isaiah Rogers (Campbell, GA junior) for 5th behind champ Alejandro Castillo, Jr. of Mexico.
  • 178-10 boys’ discus throw (1.5kg) by Tyler Merkley (Los Osos, CA junior), preventing T1D’s runner-up Kenneth Brinson, Jr. (Marist, GA junior) 175-3 from a hammer/discus sweep and adding to his own runner-up finish in the hammer.  Bailey King (Union, WA soph) was a close 3rd at 174-9.
