26 Tony Wells Development Grants Awarded

by Joy Kamani

The National Scholastic Athletics Foundation Executive Director, Jim Spier, announced today that the NSAF has awarded 26 Tony Wells Club/Team Development Grants to track & field teams and clubs throughout the country. The grants are intended to assist in the development of track and field programs in areas such as equipment, travel, and coaches education.

“We are pleased to make these awards and especially pleased that we can do so in recognition of Tony Wells.”  Wells was the coach of the Colorado Flyers for over 40 years.  He passed away last year.  His athletes have held national records in the 50y, 50m, 55m, 60m, 50y hurdles, 55m hurdles and the shot put and an astonishing number earned scholarships to college.

“The number and quality of applications we received was more than we anticipated,” Spier continued.  “Making the choices was very difficult as just about every applicant was worthy of support. Our Selection Committee placed highest priority on programs that are working to make a difference in the lives of its athletes and which reflect the mission of the NSAF to “inspire youth to live active healthy lifestyles and prepare them for future success.”

Grant recipients are required to accept the USA Track & Field’s Win With Integrity Athlete’s Pledge, complete the WinnersEdge program implemented by the IAAF and, participate in a community project.

“We are looking forward to seeing the community projects,” stated NSAF’s COO, Joy Kamani.  “We included this facet in the hope that it will foster a sense of collective responsibility and a respect for paying it forward among the athletes who benefit from the grants.”
