High School Week In Review - Feb. 18, 2013

GIRLS

 

In winning the Simplot Games, Mary Beth Sant (Valor Christian, Highlands Ranch, CO) continued her sprint dominance.  Though short of her US leading 7.30, she did win the 60m in 7.42.  No other athlete has run faster this year.  Behind Mary Beth were the numbers 3, 4 and 5 performers of the year:  Kennadi Bouyer (Curtis, Tacoma, WA), 7.45, Ky Westbrook (Chandler, AZ), 7.47, and Zainab Sanni (Smoky Hill, Aurora, CO), 7.47.

 

Gabriella Cantrell (Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland, CA) won the Simplot 200m with a US #3 24.52.  At the Kentucky HS Inviational’s oversized track, Tyra Lea (Wakefield, Raleigh, NC)  ran 24.38, with Jada Martin (Martin Luther King, Lithonia, GA) second in 24.49.

 

Quashira Mc Intosh (Hope, Providence, RI), under long time coach Thom Spann, ran a US #5 300m (39.38) in her state’s championship.  That’s the fastest flat floor time of the year.  Olivia Baker (Columbia, Maplewood, NJ), won her sectional meet in 55.33 early in the week,  then went on to win her state group meet on Saturday.

 

Emma Gallagher (Garden City, NY), the US leader in the 600 meters, ran against the “big girls” at Millrose, finishing 6th in 1:32.06.  Shea Martinez (Davis, Kaysville, UT) got under 2:10 for the first time in her life, taking the US lead at Simplot, running 2:09.14 in a solo effort.

 

Mary Cain (Bronxville, NY), continued to impress (to put it mildly), breaking her own mile record at Millrose, finishing second in 4:28.25 against the elite field.  She also bettered her 1500m record en route, clocking 4:11.72.

 

At the Grand Valley State high school meet in Michigan, there were some fireworks as well.  Twins Hannah and Haley Meier (South, Grosse Point, MI) ran 4:44.76 and 4:45.24 in the mile, with 5000m national record holder Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, MI) third in 4:47.74.  Though run on an oversized track, it is still one of the best top 3 finishes ever in a mile In a high school event.

 

Chantel Ray (Hampton, VA) won her regional 55m hurdles race in 8.04.  Patti Dziekonska (West Windsor-Plainsboro North, Plainsboro, NJ) won her sectional meet in 8.08, US #5. 

 

Dior Hall (Washington, Denver, CO) won the Great Southwest 60m hurdles in 8.28, the 4th best performance of the year.  Sasha Wallace (Castro Valley, CA) won Simplot, though not in her seasonal best.  Behind her was Quenee’ Dale (Romulus, MI) in 8.59, US #3 and Jordan Munford (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) in 8.62, =US #5.  Kortni Smyers-Jones (Holy Names, Oakland, CA) had run 8.62 in the prelims for =US #5.  Kendell Williams (Kell, Marietta, GA) won the hurdles in Kentucky with a US #3 8.43. 

 

Medgar Evers (Brooklyn, NY) increased their US lead in the 4x200, winning Millrose in 1:38.44.  They also ran 3:47.89 in winning the Millrose PSAL 4x400m.  Suffern (NY) won the Millrose Suburban 4x400 in 3:50.41, US #3.  On the oversized track at Kentucky, Wakefield (Raleigh, NC) ran 3:48.20, followed by Oakland, MI in 3:51.79.

 

Holy Names Acacemy (Albany, NY) won the Millrose Eastern 4x800m in 9:09.91, only .04 off their seasonal best.  Kellenberg (Uniondale, NY) won the Millrose CHSAA SMR in 4:06.80, US #5.

 

Alexa Harmon-Thomas (shown at left) (Lawrence Free State, Lawrence, KS), equaled the US high jump best, jumping 5-10 with her Simplot win.  Annie Rhodes (Midway, Waco, TX) jumped 13-7 at the US Air Force Academy Invitational. Learn more about Alexa in her video interview on our Facebook Page.

 

Competing in 7 events at her regional, Felecia Majors (South County, Lorton, VA), jumped 19-4.5 for one of her 4 wins.  Chyna Ries (Washington, Denver, CO) won Simplot at 19-3.5, US #5.  Sasha Wallace won the Simplot triple jump with a leap of 40-6.5.  At the U. of Missouri high school invitational, Nataliyah Friar (Holt, Wentzville, MO) triple jumped 40-4, US #4.  

 

 

With a total of 4 throws over 49 feet and a winning toss of 49-6, Stamatia Scarvelis (Dos Pueblos, Goleta, CA), broke into the top 20 all-time.  She did that at Simplot, and it is the 18th best ever indoors.  At the Ohio State HS Invitational, Katelyn Daniels (Olentangy Orange, Lewis Center, OH) threw a #2 US 46-10.25.  And behind Scarvelis at Simplot was Casidy Callahan (Norcross, GA), throwing 45-2.5, US #4.  Stamatia is the NSAF Athlete of the Week sponsored by New Balance. Learn more about Stamatia in her video interview on our Facebook Page.

 

 

 

 

 

BOYS

 

 Tatum Taylor (shown at left)(O’Dea, Seattle, WA) won the Simplot 60m in 6.73, US #2. Learn more about Tatum in his video interview on our FaceBook Page.  At Kentucky, Malafi Maat (Cordova, TN) won that meet in 6.81, US #5.  Alex Mead (Mead, Longmont, CO) was the Simplot 200m champ, clocking 21.70, US #5.  Cealomar Ways (Nease, St. Augustine, FL) was the Kentucky 200m victor, running 21.48 on the oversized track.

 

Josh Wallin (Rocky Mountain, Meridian, ID) won the Simplot 400m n 48.49, US #5.  And Brylan Slay (Winter Park, FL) was the Kentucky winner in 48.24 on the oversized track.  US leader Michael Cherry (Oscar Smith, Chesapeake, VA) won his regionals 500m, running 1:03.37, not far off his 1:02.61 US lead.  Byron Robinson (Western Branch, Chesapeake, VA) was second in that race in 1:04.37, US #3.

 

Early in the week, Edward Cheserek (St. Benedict’s, Newark, NJ) won the state private school’s championship 1000m with a 2:27.42 US #3 clocking.  Ben Malone (Pascack Valley, Hillsdale, NJ) won the Millrose Boys Mile in 4:12.62, US #3.

 

The big news of the week is Cheserek’s national record in the mile of 8:39.15 at Millrose, breaking Gerry Lindgren’s 49 year record of 8:40.0.  H also clocked 8:05.46 for 3000 meters en route, taking down Lindgren’s 8:06.3 time from the same race as the 8:40.  James Randon (Middlesex, Concord, MA) was runnerup in the USATF New England 3000m, running 8:25.12, US #2.  Cheserek is the NSAF Athlete of the Week sponsored by New Balance.

 

Aaron Simpson (Western Branch, Chesapeake, VA) won his regional’s 55m hurdles in 7.37, US #2.  Junior Tony Brown (Ozen, Beaumont, TX) got the US lead in the 60m hurdles, winning Simplot in 7.76.  James Traylor (Berkeley, CA) was second in 7.83, US #4.  At the Grand Valley State U meet, prior unknown Freddi Crittendon (Utica, MI) equaled Brown’s time and is now co-US #1 in that event. At Simplot, Ben Saarel (shown at left) (Park City, UT) put on an amazing show at 4500’, winning the 3200m in 9:00.62, US #3.  He ran 55.2 for the last 400 meters!  At Kentucky’s oversized track, Brock Baker (Oakland, Murphreesboro, TN) on in 8:59.39.  Imagine a 9:00.42 3200m at altitude and an 8:59.39 2 mile not the top distance story of the week!

 

Forest Park (Woodbridge, VA) ran 1:29.28 to win their regional.  That’s impressive on a flat track.  Elmont (NY), swapping the national lead with Union Catholic, NJ all year, won the Millrose Long Island 4x400 in 3:18.34 to put them back in the lead.

 

Kellenberg (Uniondale, NY) won the Millrose CHSAA 4x800 in 7:48.37, US #2.  Chaminade (Mineola, NY) was second in 7:50.22, US #5.  CBA (Lincroft, NJ) won the Millrose 4x800 in 7:49.23, US #3.

 

US leader Steven Dunbar (Tallwood, Virginia Beach, VA) won his regional high jump in 6-9.  Soph Bradley Jones (Oscar Smith, Chesapeake, VA) was second at the same height (=US #2).  At Pennsylvania’s TSTCA meet, Malik Moffett (Cathedral Prep, Erie, PA), also scaled 6-9, making 6 tied at that height for US #2.

 

Matt Rowland (Bellevue, OH) had a big jump at the Rubber City meet in Akron, OH, vaulting 16-6.75 for US #3.  Lane Russell (Tumwater, WA) won the Simplot triple jump in 49-1, US #3.

 

US leader Braheme Days (Bridgeton, NJ) won the state group meet shot put with a toss of 68-2.25.  Andrew Trumbetti (Northern Valley, Demarest, NJ) won his state group meet, throwing 61-4, US #4.  Josh Whitener (North Paulding, Dallas, GA) won the Simplot weight throw in 76-5, US #3.
