How to Successfully Make the Transition from High School to College

by Joy Kamani

The NSAF's second Project Triple Jump clinic kicked off Tuesday night with a no holds barred presentation from Kansas State University Jumps coach, Vincent Johnson.  Coach Johnson's hour long dialogue with our group of American and Bahamian athletes, parents and coaches stretched into almost two hours as he spoke and fielded questions on The Transition from High School to College.

Coach Johnson related each phase of the transition to the triple jump starting with the Hop Phase - the high school senior year; the Step Phase- the summer before college; the Jump Phase - freshman college year,; the Landing - Success and he concluded with the Step Out the Pit.

Perhaps the most talked about issue centered on reasons why so many great high school athletes fail to improve in college.  Coach Johnson stated that this was due to a combination of failures in each phase of the Transition and he emphasized the importance of recognizing that, "Success begins in the mind."  He reminded the athletes that if they want to succeed in anything in life they must have a Passion for it.  "Persistence follows your Passion," he stated.  "Without a passion you will fall prey to all of the distractions in college and you will allow others to steal your dream.  You must have a passion for what you do and you must protect your dreams."
