Aries Merritt Sets World Record in Brussels

by Joy Kamani

NSAF Alumnus and Olympic Gold Medalist, Aries Merritt shattered the 110 meter hurdle record tonight in Brussels at the Memorial Van Damme.  Merritt becomes the first man to run under 12.90 and the first American to hold the world record since 1993 when Roger Kingdom lost the title to Colin Jackson.  Merritt took 0.07 seconds off of the previous record held by Cuban, Dayron Robles.

Merritt's road to Olympic gold and now world record holder has been a stead upward trek.  He placed 6th in the 110 hurdles at the NSAF 2003 Outdoor Nationals.  In 2004 he made his first national team and won the event at the IAAF World Championships in Grosetto, Italy.   After graduating from the University of Tennessee he moved to Texas where he has been training at Texas A&M University.
