This is a new event for 2020. It has been run in the past and, in fact, there are National Records (thanks to Jack Shepard for this information):
(This was also run from time to time through the 1980s in many parts of the U.S. as well in New York City, though mostly in the 1950s).
We will run 4 teams per heat, using lanes 2, 3, 4 and 5, and the event will run entirely in lanes. The finish line will be 35 meters before the “normal” finish line (so that the exchange zones can be in the middle of home and back straightaways). Preferred lanes are 4-5-3-2. (Normally lane 5 would be the preferred lane. However, that lane goes slightly into the bank at the first exchange. The other 3 lanes’ exchanges do not).
If more that 8 teams enter, there will be trials and finals, with trials at 12:05pm (Girls) and 12:25pm (Boys) on Saturday, March 14, 2020. (That schedule may be adjusted depending on heats required). There will an 8 team 2 section final per gender, with those finals scheduled for 7:40pm (Girls) and 7:45pm (Boys) on the same day, March 14, 2020.
If less than 8 teams enter, there will be a 2 section final at the time scheduled for trials (12:05pm Girls and 12:25pm Boys). Therefore there will be no reason for the scheduled final (7:40pm and 7:45pm) and the schedule will be adjusted accordingly.
