Mike Byrnes Coach of the Year - George Moss

George R. Moss was born in Edgefield, S.C. He is the third son of the late Louie and Martha Moss; He also has three sisters too.

He attended Edgefield Public schools and is a 1970 graduate of W.E. Parker high School .he lettered in football, basketball, and track while in high school.

Prior to earning his college degree in business administration from the American International University in Chicago, he also studied at Talladega College while participating in basketball.

Following his graduation from AIU Moss served in the United States Army and Marine Corp. He then achieved the rank of first sergeant. Moss stayed in the military for twenty years. During active duty Moss taught ROTC at Furman University for three years, he retired from the military in 1994.

Coming to J.l. Mann the 1994-95 school year moss began his track experience by assisting in boys track. The next season moss took over the girls program at Mann and soon the dynasty began. Moss track accomplishments are as follows;

  • Twelve County and region track titles
  • Taco bell international championship
  • Participation in the Diamond Hornet international.
  • Character games champions

Besides these prestigious track championships moss’s girls have finished as South Carolinas top AAA girls track team six times;(2002,06,06,07,08,09) and runner up in 2003.very impressive six state championships in seven years and the five consecutive from 2005-2009 is the first girls team to accomplish that.

Two of his girls have won the Gatorades female athletes of the year in track and field. They are Amberly Nesbitt ;( twice), and Briana Nelson.

His personal coaching resume includes Sc track and Field coach of the year- six times, region coach of the year-12 times; Sporting News Coach of the year three times, and South Carolina Coaches association coach of the year three times. In addition to the honors his girl’s team has been ranked number 1 of last five seasons.

Over 25 years of performers have earned college scholarships to run track. These include from SEC and NCAA 100 meter dash champion AN at USC.

Moss States, “My team’s success is due to hard work, dedication, and believing in each other.” He adds this makes coaching fun.

He and his wife Marie reside in Greenville and have three children: Darrell, Simonetta, and Sabrina. He also has five grandchildren.
