Small School, Big Results: Jim Mitchell - NSSF Indoor Coach of the Year
The Mike Byrnes Indoor Coach of the Year goes to Jim Mitchell, Bronxville High School’s very successful Head Girls’ Coach.
Jim was born in Somers, New York in 1944, and graduated from Regis High School and Fordham University (with a B.A., and an M.S. in Latin and Greek). He began coaching in 1967 at Cathedral High School in Queens and then was an Assistant Coach with Fordham College from 1973-1978. In 1978, Jim took a job teaching Latin at Bronxville (in Westchester County, New York) and by the following year, he was coaching the school’s first real girls’ track team, a role he continues to fill today.
Despite the school’s small size, with an average graduating class of only about 100 students (girls and boys), Bronxville High and Coach Mitchell have scored very big together. During Coach Mitchell’s tenure, Bronxville’s accomplishments include 10 New York State Cross Country Championships, 15 4x800 New York State Championships titles, 4 National Relay Championships (two 4xMiles and two 4x800s), and a national relay record in the 4xMile. Bronxville girls have earned 170 All-American certificates, reflecting the deep strength of Coach Mitchell’s teams over the past 34 years.
