Cuba CSI Day 2 Highlights: Blazing sprints, relays for Team NSAF

Sprints: Clark blasts US#1; Hall, Terry also win
  • US#1 10.18(+) 100m dash for Team NSAF’s Ryan Clark (Banneker, GA sr), becoming the first prep under 10.20 this year and turning back teammate Noah Lyles (T.C. Williams, VA jr) at 10.38.  In 3rd was Cuba’s Edel R. Amores at 10.75.
  • 20.45(-1.7w) boys’ 200m dash for Cuba’s Reynier Mena, nipping Noah Lyles (T.C. Williams, VA jr) at US#3 20.48 in a thrilling battle.  Dylan Peebles (Wakefield, NC jr) was 3rd at 21.54.
  • 11.63(+1.1w) girls’ 100m dash by Cassondra Hall (Warner Robins, GA jr), leading a 1-2 NSAF sweep with Twanisha Terry (Miami NW, FL soph) at 11.82.  Cuba’s Yunisleidi de la C. Garcia was 3rd at 12.08.
  • 23.5w(+2.3) girls’ 200m dash (hand-timed) by Twanisha Terry (Miami NW, FL soph), followed by Cuba’s Yunisleidi de la C. Garcia at 24.1h
Hurdles: Impressive triumphs for Grimes, Cockrell
  • US#1 50.80 boys’ 400m hurdles by Norman Grimes (Canyon, TX jr), coming from behind to nip Cuba’s Leandro Zamora at 50.93 in perhaps the weekend’s most exciting race.  It was just the 2nd 400H of Grimes’ career after the 52.67 prelim he ran earlier in the day.
  • 59.37 girls’ 400m hurdles by Anna Cockrell (Providence Day, NC jr), followed by teammate Brooklyn Broadwater (Springside Chestnut Hill, PA jr) at 1:03.26.
Relays: Blazing times, sweeps for Team NSAF
  • Meet record 40.03 boys’ 4x100m relay by Team NSAF, prevailing over Cuba’s 41.19 and La Habana’s 42.80.
  • 44.80 girls’ 4x100m relay by Team NSAF, winning decisively over Cuba’s 46.80 and La Habana’s 48.51.
  • 3:12.80 boys’ 4x400m relay by Team NSAF, holding off Cuba’s fine 3:14.25.
  • 3:44.64 girls’ 4x400m relay by Team NSAF, winning by more than 8 seconds over Cuba at 3:53.06.
Jumps: Dominating wins for Brooks, Corrin
  • 6-11.5/2.12m boys’ high jump by Jaron Brooks (Henry Clay, KY jr), with Yusneil Jorrin (INV) 2nd at 6-0.75.
  • 20-9.75/6.34m girls’ long jump by Courtney Corrin (Harvard-Westlake, CA jr), winning by nearly a foot over Cuba’s Disnelys J. Thaureaux at 6.06m.  Other Team NSAF finishers included Chinne Okoronkwo in 7th at 18-1.75/5.53m and high-jump champ Nicole Greene (Ponte Vedra, FL sr) in 9th at 17-5.5/5.32m.
  • 52-8.25 boys’ triple jump by Cuba’s Leslie Caesa, edging teammates Cristian A. Napoles (52-4.5) and Julio C. Carbonell (52-2).  Ja’Mari Ward (Cahokia, IL jr) was the top NSAF jumper at 47-9.
  • 12-1.5 girls’ pole vault by Cuba’s Lisa M. Salomon (no NSAF entry).
Throws:  Four victories for Team NSAF crew
  • 48-2.75/14.70m girls’ shot put from Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, MO jr), overcoming a submerged sector (heavy rains) and leading a 1-2-3 NSAF sweep with Kiana Phelps at 42-9.5/13.04m and Kamryn Brinson 36-2.25/11.03m.
  • 221-9/67.60m Junior men’s hammer throw by Adam Kelly (Barrington, RI sr), leading an NSAF 1-2 finish with teammate Isaiah Rogers (Campbell, GA jr) at 205-5/62.62m.
  • 155-7/47.43m girls’ discus throw by Kiana Phelps (Kingsley-Pierson, IA jr).  She was followed in 2nd by Rosalina Alvarez of Cuba at 148-1/45.15m, while NSAF teammates Rivera and Katelyn Gochenour (Marion Catholic, NE jr) were 3rd and 5th at 143-4/43.70m and 136-5/41.60m, respectively.
  • 178-3/54.35m Junior men’s discus throw by Ryan Camp (Archer, GA jr), more than three meters ahead of Eduardo A. Noriega of Cuba at 168-1/51.25.
  • 185-0/56.40m Youth boys’ discus throw from Mario A. Diaz, leading a 1-2-3 Cuban sweep.  Isaiah Rogers (Campbell, GA jr) was the top NSAF finisher in 4th with 160-5/48.90m.
  • 54-3.75/16.55m Youth girls’ shot put by Cuba’s Rosangela Nunez, winning by nearly 2 meters (no NSAF entry).
  • 209-3/63.78m Youth boys’ hammer throw by Ledian Fabregas (INV) (no NSAF entries).
Distances:  Impressive 800s for Walker, MacKay
  • 2:05.79 girls’ 800m run by Sarah Walker (Germantown Friends, PA jr), winning by nearly 7 seconds over Lisneidys Lopez (INV) at 2:12.62.
  • 1:52.35 boys’ 800m run by Cuba’s Yassiel Silega, topping Logan MacKay (Davis, UT jr) at 1:53.05 – as MacKay was just short of sweeping the 1,500m and 800m over two days.
