Team NSAF – 25 strong – has arrived in Havana for #CSICuba17 and started the 4-day Memorial Barrientos Thursday with the schedule hitting full gear Friday. The meet encompasses the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational, the original post-season NSAF event developed. This is the 11th CSI the NSAF has held since the event began in 2006 and the 3rd in Havana, Cuba, following 2016 and the historic debut there in 2015.

Tyson Jones (Desert Edge, AZ junior) won Thursday’s shot put, hitting 17.99m (59-0.25) and was 3rd in the discus – the first NSAF athlete to compete with everyone else starting Friday or later.

The 25 athletes hail from 11 different states, primarily from the southern part of the country and where athletes' state meets will have already taken place: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida (4), Georgia (5), Maryland (2), North Carolina (3), Pennsylvania, Rhode Island (2), South Carolina and Texas (4).  The roster is made up primarily of high school juniors, with some seniors and sophomores mixed in.

14 team members have already achieved New Balance Nationals Indoor and/or Outdoor All-American status, including 2017 NBNI pentathlon champions Kyle Garland and Anna Hall, and NBNI/NBNO triple jump champ Jasmine Moore.  In fact, Garland’s pentathlon set a Junior Class national record, while Moore and Brian Herron have broken Sophomore and Freshman (’16) class marks in their specialties.

The coaching staff includes Carmen Jackson, the Miami Northwestern, Fla. girls coach who is a two-time recipient of the Mike Byrnes Coach of the Year – awarded at NBNO (2006, 2015).  Her Miami NW Bulls have now won nine straight state titles and 14 overall.

Also, Moore and Roman Mitchell are each part of special NSAF elite training programs – Moore with Project Triple Jump and Mitchell with Project Javelin Gold.

The NSAF staff for the event, serving as managers, coaches and other capacities, include Executive Director Jim Spier and COO Joy Kamani; Board Members Tracy Sundlun and Paul Limmer; staff members Kristi Reiger and Steve Underwood; medical staff members Dr. Liz Wheeler, Dr. Emily Krodel, Matt Devens and Captain Scott Julich; Sports Psychologist Dr. Margaret Ottley; Cultural Liason/Interpreter Edwin Rivera; and Coach Jackson.

NOTE: Original team selections Anthony Schwartz, Cagen Campbell, Maiah Walker and Thomas Burns were unable to compete. Miami NW senior sprinter Tiondre Toomer (see below) was a late addition.
