Welcome to the 2012 Caribbean Scholastic Invitational

The Caribbean Scholastic Invitational (CSI) began in 2006. It is a collaborative effort between the NSSF and the athletics federation of Puerto Rico.

Each year a team is selected of underclass athletes from the U.S. and competes against others from the Caribbean. For most of the U.S. athletes it is the first time competing internationally. That experience is meant to “break the ice” for when these athletes compete for the U.S. on other international teams.

Athletes who have competed include NCAA champions Bianca Knight, Jessica Beard, Johnny Dutch and US high school record holders Wayne Davis and Avione Allgood.

The NSSF is indebted to the City of Carolina, PR and to the leadership of Victor Lopez.

2011 Race in Review

For the first year, the event spanned two days. It was held in conjunction with Puerto Rico's Junior Championships.

The U.S. team, made up of all underclassmen, performed admirably. In fact many of them went on to make the U.S. Youth team which competed in the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France.

Puerto Rico's outstanding sprinter, Carlos Rodriguez, got the 100m win (10.46) over Jeryl Brazil (LA) 10.53 and Ronald Darby MD) 10.58. Darby got a PB 21.05 in the 200m, over Aldrich Bailey (TX) at 21.50. Arman Hall (FL) had a big 400 race, running 46.95, a meet record by .3 seconds. He would eventually improve to a US high school-leading 46.01 by season-end.

Noah Findlay (TN) won the 800 in 1:55.15. Soph Artie Burns (FL) edged Jordan Moore (GA) in the 110m Hurdles, 13.79 to 13.82. Burns also won the 400m Hurdles (51.89). That time would hold up as the #2 time in the nation, and the season's sophomore best.

The team of Darby, Bailey, Champ Page and Brazil got the meet record in the 4x100 in 40.32.

Consistent Devin Field (TX) won the LJ in 24-6.25 in less than stellar conditions. His jump was the meet record, breaking that of Marquise Goodwin who jumped 24-5 of 2008. The "Browns" took 1-2 in the Triple Jump, with Chris Brown (SC) at 50-0.75 and Imani Brown (PA) at 49-2.5.

Tyler Schultz (SD) won the junior-weight shot put with a toss of 56-11.25. He also took the junior-weight discus at 160-4.

For the girls, Jennifer Madu (TX), who would eventually become the IAAF World Youth Champ in this event, won in 11.59, .08 ahead of Briana Vaughn (GA).

Ariah Graham (NC), whose team would become the New Balance Outdoor Nationals champion, won the 400 in 55.45. Dominican Maria Mancebo doubled in the 800m and 1500m, winning both with times of 2:10.10 and 4:29.34, respectively. Both were meet records. Samantha George (NC) was second in the 1500m with a big PB of 4:30.42.

Autumne Franklin (MD) edged Puerto Rican Natshalie Santiago in the 100m Hurdles, 14.04 to 14.06. She was second to Amber Bryant-Brock (GA) in the 400m hurdles, 59.63 to Bryant-Brock's 58.67. They were the top 2 times in meet history.
