HEPTATHLON DAY 2

Long Jump: Emma Fitzgerald (Thayer Academy, Braintree, MA) got a lifetime best in the long jump (18-10) to improve her standing.   Kaylee Hinton (Texas Tech) jumped 18-06.75.  These were the point standings after 5 events:

Javelin: Fitzgerald launched her second best throw ever and the best in heptathlon competition (166-01) to move in the standings.   She needs to run 2:25.18 to break Kendell Williams’ high school record; she has a best of 2:28.19.

These were the point standings after 6 events:

1. Arianna Rodriguez  Cuba  5145
2. Sarah Lagger   Austria  5081

19. Kaylee Hinton   USA  4594

WOMEN’S TRIPLE JUMP qualifying

Chinne Okoronkwo (Mountlake Terrace, WA) had two fouls (one tantalizingly close to legal) and one legal jump (40-06) which was not good enough to qualify.  Bria Matthews got the auto qualifier (43-03.75) on her final jump – 43-09.25 as all competitors faced headwinds during the competition.  Matthews was one of three auto qualifiers led by Ting Chen (China) at 45-02.25.

WOMEN’S HIGH JUMP qualifying

In a relatively small field of 17 jumpers, only 4 did not advance.   Those clearing 5-10.75 did advance, and that included the only American in the field, Nicole Greene of U of North Carolina.

MEN’S 800m Round 1

Both Americans advanced:  Vincent Crisp (Texas Tech) and Brian Bell (Houston).   The qualifying rounds were mainly tactical and did not sub 1:48.40 times.

WOMEN’S 1500m Round 1

It has been a rarity where U.S. athletes advanced as part of automatic qualifiers.  Both Christina Aragon (Billings, MT) and Alexa Efraimson (Nike) did so with relative ease.

WOMEN’S 200m Round 1

Jayla Kirkland (Woodlawn, Birmingham) ran about 50 meters and pulled up.  She limped across the finish line and did not advance.   Taylor Bennett (Baylor) did not look especially sharp, but did get a third place automatic qualifier to advance to the semis.
