2016 IAAF U20 Championships – Day 3 morning session summary

    

WOMEN’S HAMMER qualifying

It took 193-01 to qualify to the 12-woman final but the Americans, Sade Olatoye (Ohio State) and Joy Mc Arthur (Mater Dei, Santa Ana, CA), though capable, did not throw their bests on this day.  Olatoye finished 15th (192-00) and McArthur 18th (187-02).

HEPTATHLON 100m Hurdles

Emma Fitzgerald (Thayer Academy, Braintree, MA) and Kaylee Hinton (Texas Tech) ran well, with Hinton at 14.12 and Fitzgerald at 14.34.  The best was Adrianna Rodriguez (Cuba) at 13.69.

HEPTATHLON High Jump

Fitzgerald was at 5-07.25 and Hinton at 5-08.5, with the best jump by Bianca Salming (Sweden) at 6-00.   After two events, here are the scores:

WOMEN’S LONG JUMP qualifying

The Americans, Bria Matthews (Georgia Tech) and U. of Houston signee Samiyah Samuels (Cypress Springs, Houston, TX), qualified 10th and 11th in a 12-woman field as only four were eliminated from a field of 16.  Matthews jumped 20-01.25 and Samuels 19-11.25.

MEN’S POLE VAULT qualifying

Both Americans, Deakin Volz (Virginia Tech) and Chris Nilsen (Park Hill, Kansas City, MO) advanced along with 12 others.  They cleared 17-00.75, as did Armand Duplantis (Lafayette, LA/Sweden).

MEN’S 3000m STEEPLECHASE qualifying

Kai Benedict (California) got a one-second PB (8:51.37) in qualifying.  Alex Rogers (Texas) finished 19th overall and did not move on (8:59.00).   The top four qualifiers included two Kenyans and two Ethiopians.

MEN’S 400m HURDLES qualifying

Taylor Mc Laughlin (Michigan) qualified to the semifinals fourth overall in 51.28.   Justin Alexander (El Camino JC) tripped over hurdle #9 and was well out of the mix.  He ultimately was disqualified for interference.

MEN’S 200m qualifiying

USC-bound Michael Norman (Vista Murrieta, Murrieta Valley, CA) made it look easy, shutting it down with 40 meters to go and running 20.74.   Micaiah Harris (Western Branch, Chesapeake, VA) auto-qualified as well, running 21.19.
