Track & Field and Cross-Country Bulletin for Sep 13, 2013

Registration is open for the  Great American Cross Country Festival, the  and the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge set for October 5th in Cary, NC. 

The events include a full slate of races, including the prestigeous New Balance Race of Champions.  The bounce house, face painters, jugglers, clowns, drummers and other entertainment will again add to the festival atmostphere as we host an expected 4000- plus athletes.  

All information, including hotels, schedules, facility directions and more are on the meet websites. The American Independent Schools XC Challenge has been cancelled this year.  New rule changes now permit many independent schools to compete in our GAXC Festival races.

Since Steve Underwood joined our staff a few weeks ago we've revved up our meet coverage, posted numerous video interviews on our NSAF Youtube channel and added new sections to our website. Our cross-country coverage will include a weekly preview and recap.

 

NSAF's Big Plans

Introducing the NSAF Coach of the Week

This week's coach is Annemarie Marino, from Barrington RI.  Coach Marino talks with Steve Underwood about her thoughts going into this year's cross-country season, summer training and ultimate state and national goals for the fall. Last year the Barrington Lady Eagles claimed their first New England Championships title and finish 3rd (as a club team) in NXN Northeast. Last week they opened at the  Injury Fund Carnival in Burrillville, winning the Hindley division handily with 24 points.


 

 

Bounding Ahead into 2013-14- we've added 4 new athletes to our Project Triple Jump- part of our Performance Clinic Series. They will join World Youth bronze medalist Keturah Orji, World Youth finalist KeAndre Bates, Texas 3A state champ Felicienne Axel and  Darrielle McQueen, the Golden South and Caribbean Scholastic Invitational Champion. We've made our athlete selections for the 2013-14 Project Kultan Keihas. We will announce those names next week.  

Our two domestic javelin clinics in October and December are open to any high school athlete.  Both clinics will be held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Finland's National Coach, Kari Ihalainen will return to join Jeff Gorski and Olympic medliast, Bill Schmidt for the October clinic scheduled for Oct. 17-20.  The  second clinic is scheduled for December 27-30 with Finland's National Junior coach and 1991 World Champion, Kimmo Kinnunen.   Registration is open.

 


Recipients of our inaugural  Cedric Walker Development Grants will be notified by Monday, September 16th.  Schools and clubs from ten states will receive grants primarily for program development through equipment purchases.  We are pleased to announce that our partners at UCS will be offering a discount to our grant recipients who purchase their equipment through UCS.

Applications are now open for the 2014 Tony Wells Development Grants.  Please read the grant requirements carefully before submitting your application and bear in mind that these are development grants and not travel grants.
