NSAF Athletes of the Week - Sasha Wallace & TréTez Kinnaird

SASHA WALLACE

Sasha Wallace (Castro Valley, CA) has been trading the US hurdle lead  with Colorado’s Dior Hall all year.  One of them may finally get the national record at the New Balance Indoor Nationals next week.  Whether it’s Dior or Sasha, one thing is clear:  it will be a fast race and the national record is sure to go.

Sasha came close at the Brooks meet in Seattle, running 8.18 for 60m hurdles (that’s about 7.50 for 55m hurdles!), #3 all-time.  Number 2 all-time is Dior Hall at 8.17, and the national record is 8.16 set by Jackie Coward in 2008.  The Californian is muli-talented also having jumped a US #3 40-7.5 triple jump this year as well as 42-4.75 outdoors last Spring.

TRETEZ KINNAIRD

Tretez Kinnaird (Butler, Louisville, KY) is the leading returnee in the 800 meters, having run

1:49.31 outdoors last spring.  He took the US indoor lead at the Hoosier Invitational on February 9, running 1:51.83.

On Sunday at the Brooks meet’s oversized U of Washington track, he clocked 1:50.97.  Though he lost to 1:47 Canadian Tyler Smith by only .11, his time would still rank him 11th all-time on any sized track indoors.

It will be a great matchup at the New Balance Indoor Nationals next week between Tretez and New Jersey’s Ben Malone, who ranks #2 on the all-time 800 meter list at 1:49.94.  The national record is 1:49.21, set by Robby Andrews of New Jersey in 2009.  Kinnaird and Malone, we’re sure, have that in their sites, and we might have a new national record by the end of next week.
