by Steve Underwood

It was a great day for PRs and enthusiastic javelin throwing Sunday at the 2nd Annual American JavFest at East Stroudsburg South HS in PA!  The most significant highlights came in the High School Boys division as two athletes went over 200 ft. for the first time: Eric Garner (Lititz, PA) at 208-2 and Gavin Darcy (Dunmore, PA -- sophomore) at 206-4.  More to come.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Boys HS: Big PRs for Garner, Darcy -- Two first-time 200-footers highlighted the boys' HS division as Eric Garner (Warwick HS, PA junior) and Gavin Darcy (Dunmore HS, PA soph) threw 208-2 and 206-4, respectively.  Garner hit his winner on his first attempt of the day, improving more than 20 feet from his previous best, and moving to #7 on the national list.  His next best of the day was 195-0.  Darcy, meanwhile, hit 186-7 on his first throw and 190-0 on his 2nd as he established 2nd place, then hit 206-4 on his final throw for a massive 18-foot PR over the 188-9 he entered with.  Ironically, current Project Javelin soph Roman Mitchell also had a huge PR of exactly the same distance Sunday, 206-4, as they are now tied for #2 in the country among 10th-graders and #10 overall.  Adam Sadowski was 3rd at 189-7.
  • Girls HS: Campbell takes it by 5 ft. -- It was Cambrie Campbell (Moniteau, PA  soph), the Class AA 3rd-place finisher here in PA, claiming the girls' HS title here at 135-1, achieved on her 2nd throw.  Lillian Hill (North East, PA soph), whose brother Grayson threw for Project Javelin and was a '15 NBNO All-American, was 2nd at 130-10 and Paige Buchanan (Monmouth Junction, NJ soph) -- who entered at 111-6 -- had a nearly 20-foot PR for 3rd at 130-1.
  • Men's Open/Collegiate/Elite: NCAA champ Thompson claims title -- Mississippi State's NCAA champ Curtis Thompson (Florence, NJ) , who also was 2nd in the Olympic Trials but less than a meter from the qualifying standard, triumphed by more than 20 feet with 260-11.  After opening with 233-4, Thompson got his winner on his 2nd attempt.  He was followed by Olympic Trials 6th-place finisher Robert Robbins, who just finished at Cornell, with 247-8 -- achieved on his 3rd throw after a few sub-par efforts.  Chris Carper (Altoona, PA) was 3rd at 240-2, which he got on his final attempt.  Barry Krammes, local meet organizer and one of our NSAF Project Javelin Gold coaches, was 6th with 229-2 in what he said was his final competition.
  • Women's Open/Collegiate/Elite: Hamilton dominates -- Kim Hamilton of Knoxville, TN and Nike -- 6th in the recent Olympic Trials with a near-PR 192-5 and 3rd in the 2012 OT -- won decisively with a best throw of 186-2.  Lia Negra (Nutley, NJ) was 2nd at 145-10 and Lisa Sesink-Clee (Wyckoff, NJ) 3rd at 135-9.
