Day 1 Morning Review: 2016 IAAF U20 World Champs

The highlight of the morning session was Ja’Mari Ward’s clutch jump to make the finals.   He was in 13th place (12 make the finals) and needed to improve on his 24-06.5 second jump.  He was only 2” away from making the final.  On his final jump, he soared to 26-01.5 [0.4w] to lead all qualifiers, = #8 all-time high school. Harrison Schrage, the other American, could manage only 23-05.5 to finish 23rd overall.

  

The good:

Women’s 800m round 1:

Samantha Watson won her heat in 2:07.30, qualifying for the semis and running the 8th fastest time overall. Aaliyah Miller was fourth in her heat (the top 4 automatically qualified) in 2:08.21.  The leader was Tigist Ketema (Ethiopia) at 2:05.51.

Men’s 100m round 1:

Noah Lyles led all qualifiers in winning his heat at 10.28.   Hakim Montgomery was third in his race (10.58) to qualify as one of the “automatic” top 3 in his heat.   Daniel Estrada (Northern Guilford, Greensboro, NC), representing Puerto Rico, also automatically qualified, running 10.55.

Men’s Shot Put qualifying:

Both Adrian Piperi and Bronson Osborn qualified for the final, throwing the 6k ball 64-02.5 and 64-05 respectively.

Other events:

Women’s Javelin qualifying:

Both Emma Fitzgerald (151-10) and Katelyn Gochenour (155-11) have had better days.  They finished 32nd and 34th out 42 competitors.  It took 171-04 to make the final, with Eda Tugsuz of Turkey leading with a throw of 189-06.

Women’s 3000m Steeplechase qualifying:

Kelly Naumann was 26th (10:45.90) and Rachel Nichwitz 30th (11:01.69) out of 32.  It took 10:21.09 to make the final.

Men’s 1500m qualifying:

Diego Zarate (3:47.95) was 19th overall and Kendall Muhammad (3:51.27) 30th of 41 runners. Only 12 qualified.
