NSAF On-Site at MITS (Mich.) state meet: Top honors for Griffith, Kemp, Meyers, Bracey

MITS Athletes of the Meet: Griffith, Kemp, Meyers, Bracey

  • Boys Field: State indoor record and MI#1, US#12 47-10.75 boys’ triple jump by Isaiah Griffith (Detroit East English sr) – the 3rd time this season he’s broken the overall state mark.  He won by 16 inches over Terius Wheatley (Ann Arbor Pioneer sr) at MI#2 46-6.75.  Griffith was also 2nd in the long jump, just missing the double.
  • Girls Field:  MITS meet record and MI#1, =US#8 13-0 girls pole vault by Landon Kemp (Greenville jr), clearing on her first attempt before bowing out at 13-3.  Rachel Dolan (Goodrich jr) was 2nd with MI#5 12-0, beating two ahead of her on the state list.  Kemp was also 3rd in the 60H.
  • Boys Track: MITS meet record and MI#1, US#9 21.72 boys’ 200m dash by Khance Meyers (Kentwood TC/East Kentwood jr), the nation’s fastest on an unbanked regulation track.  He was followed by Zagwon Powell (Ypsilanti Lincoln sr) at =MI#2 22.22 and Delan Wynn (Southfield sr) at MI#4 22.25.
  • Girls Track:  MI#1 7.54 60m dash, MI#1 18-6.5 long jump girls’ sprint/jump double by Sekayi Bracey (Kentwood TC/East Kentwood sr).  Bracey was followed by Madison Meredith (Beverly Hills Groves sr) at MI#3 7.69 and Brooke Bogan at MI#5 7.72 in the 60, reversing their order from semis.  In the long jump, Taylor Dziatczak (Macomb Lutheran North jr) was 2nd with MI#3 17-8.5, as standing MI#2 Jada Steele (HW Chandler Park sr) was just 5th. 

More top national class performances: Medley relays on fire

  • MI#1, US#1 3:32.78 boys’ 1,600m sprint medley relay by Motor City TC (Oak Park HS), winning by more than seven seconds over Intensity TC at MI#2 3:39.83.
  • MI#1, US#2 4:04.71 girls’ 1,600m sprint medley relay by Ann Arbor Youth TC (Ann Arbor Pioneer HS), taking it by more than six seconds over Michigan Racers at MI#2/US#11 4:10.82.
  • MI#1, US#4 6-10 boys’ high jump by Nathan McKeown (Hesperia sr), who PR’d twice during the competition.  Alex Klemm (Macomb Lutheran North sr) was 2nd at 6-6.
  • MI#1, US#4 12:08.30 girls’ distance medley relay by NXC Running Club (Northville HS), topping the MI#2/US#9 12:14.96 by Ann Arbor Youth (Ann Arbor Pioneer HS).  Midland Rat Pack at MI#3/US#10 12:15.77 and Breen TC at MI#4 12:18.70 followed in 3rd and 4th with two more sub-12:20 national-class times.
  • MI#1, US#9 6.84 boys’ 60m dash by Donovan Johnson (Cass Tech jr), nipping Chiebuka Onwuzurike (Brother Rice sr) at MI#2, US#12 6.85.
  • MI#1, US#10 55.52 girls’ 400m dash by Anna Jefferson (Motor City TC/Oak Park sr), winning by nearly two seconds over Chloe Abbott (Northville sr) at 57.37.  Jefferson also anchored the winning 4x400.
  • MI#1, US#11 45-9 girls’ shot put by Nikole Sargent (Flint Powers sr), a mark she hit twice during the competition.  Kayli Johnson (Grosse Pointe South sr) was 2nd in MI#2 45-0, while Emily Meier (Canton sr) took 3rd with 42-8.5 (off her MI#3 44-5.5 best).
  • MI#1, US#11 7.96 boys’ 60m hurdles by Kentre Patterson (East Lansing jr), turning back Sam Binkowski (Flushing sr) with MI#2 8.05. 
  • MI#1, US#12 1:54.47 boys’ 800m run by Cameron Cooper (Motor City TC/Oak Park jr), staving off Jackson Grzymkowski (White Lake Lakeland sr) at MI#2 1:54.79.  De’Karyea Freeman (Motor City TC/Oak Park sr) was 3rd at MI#3 1:56.06.
More state leaders: Great 200, LJ battles
  • MI#1 24.69 girls’ 200m dash by Jewel Davis (Plymouth sr), nipping Taylor Manson (Motor City TC/East Lansing jr) at 24.72 in a terrific battle – with two of the best regulation flat-track marks in the country.  Anavia Battle (Wayne jr) was 3rd at 25.13.
  • =MI#1 23-1 boys’ long jump from Andre Welch (Kentwood TC/East Kentwood jr), with his last attempt surpassing Isaiah Griffith (Detroit East English) at MI#3 22-6.  Co-state leader Anthony Owens (Jackson sr) was just 7th at 21-9.
  • MI#1 15-3 boys’ pole vault by Nate Fasbender (Reed City sr), just out-leaping Jacob Battani (Almont sr) at MI#2 15-0.
  • MI#1 56-11 boys’ weight throw by Jannik Schmidt (Salem sr), winning by nearly six feet over Zach Kunst (GR Kenowa Hills sr)) at MI#4 51-0.
  • MI#1 9:26.42 girls’ 4x800m relay by Ann Arbor Youth (Ann Arbor Pioneer HS), winning by more than 18 seconds over Midland Rat Pack at MI#2 9:44.59.
  • MI#1 (incl. clubs) 1:29.68 boys’ 4x200m relay by Michigan All-Stars, prevailing by 1.68 seconds over the Detroit Chargers (Cass Tech HS) at MI#2 1:31.36.  Kentwood TC (East Kentwood HS) was 3rd at 1:31.60.
  • MI#1 3:23.40 boys’ 4x400m relay from Motor City TC (Oak Park HS), just nipping Michigan All-Stars at MI#2 3:23.53.  Intensity TC was 3rd at MI#3 3:24.77.
  • MI#1 7:59.60 boys’ 4x800m relay by Motor City TC (Oak Park HS), pulling away from Degeneration X (Bay City Western HS) at MI#2 8:03.50 and Spirit of Pre (Saline HS) at MI#3 8:05.07.
  • MI#1 (incl. clubs) 10:29.70 distance medley relay by Harold 397 (club), taking it by more than four seconds over Spirit of Pre (Saline HS) at MI#2 10:34.41.
  • MI#1 4:57.98 girls’ 1,600m run for Lexa Barrott (Northville sr), prevailing over Rachel Bonner (Port Huron sr) at MI#2 4:59.68.  Anna Jensen (Midland Jefferson 8th-grader), the all-tracks state leader at 4:53.94, was 3rd in 5:01.08.
  • MI#1 4:20.77 boys’ 1,600m run by Abe Visser (Grandville Calvin Christian sr), outkicking Anthony Berry (Traverse City Central sr) at MI#2 4:21.47.
  • MI#1 9:28.50 boys’ 3,200m run by Noah Jacobs (Corunna jr), pulling away from Mitchell Day (Alpena jr) at 9:29.84.
  • MI#1 8.69 girls’ 60m hurdles by Britten Bowen (Ann Arbor Pioneer soph) in the semis, leading qualifiers to the final – where she ran 8.96.  State-ranked #3 (8.91) Michaiah Thomas (Detroit Country Day) was 2nd with 9.12 after a 9.11 in the semis.
More impressive champions: MCTC continues dominion
  • 3:51.99 girls’ 4x400m run by state leader (3:48.31) Motor City TC – the top regulation flat track time of the season.  They edged their own “B” team at MI#2 3:52.22, with Michigan All-Stars (MI#3 4:01.24) and Ann Arbor Youth/Ann Arbor Pioneer HS (4:01.62, just off their MI#4 4:01.32) in the next two spots.
  • MI#2 2:14.62 girls’ 800m run by Alice Hill (Ann Arbor Pioneer jr), pulling away from Sydney Benson at MI#3 2:16.57 (Grosse Point North sr) and Emily Wall (Midland Dow jr) at MI#4 2:16.86.
  • MI#2 48-0 girls’ weight throw by Erica Lechner (Harbor Springs jr), defeating state leader (49-11 PR) Emily Meier (Canton sr) – who was 2nd with 46-7.
  • MI#2 1:42.78 girls’ 4x200m relay by Ann Arbor Youth TC (Ann Arbor Pioneer HS), winning by more than two seconds out of the penultimate section after two top teams dropped batons in the final section. 
  • 58-3.5 boys’ shot put by Justin Scavarda (Mason sr), edging defending champ Connor Bandel (Oxford sr), who threw 58-1.  Bandel came into the meet with MI#1 59-10.5 and Scavarda MI#2 59-10.
  • 49.92 boys’ 400m dash by standing MI#1 Montel Hood (Wayne sr), holding off Jonathan McKay (Flint Kearsley sr) at =MI#2 50.21 – who in turn had come from behind and outkicked David Alberdi (Saline sr) at =MI#4 50.25. 
  • 10:56.76 girls’ 3,200m run by Grace Cutler (Royal Oak jr), barely a second better than Ava Strenge (Battle Creek St. Philip jr) at MI#4 10:57.91.  Cutler was just off her MI#3 time of 10:55.52, while some of the state leaders sat this one out or did other events.
  • 34-8.75 girls’ triple jump by standing MI#1 Abigail Bansen (Stevensville Lakeshore jr), just off her 35-3 best.  She was followed by Nicole Bow (Dexter fr) at 33-11, off her state #2 34-3 best.
  • 5-5.5 girls’ high jump by standing MI#1 Jada Wimberly (Ann Arbor Pioneer sr), just off her 5-6 best.  Three others followed at 5-4, with Bridget McHugh (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer frosh) getting 2nd on misses.
