US#1s/Top National Highlights: Cooper's "triple" includes 2 frosh marks

Stellar triumphs for Schrage, Marshall; Reed, Harris double impressively
  • Freshman class national records at 400 (47.97) and 200 (21.54) by Tyrese Cooper (Miami Gardens Xpress/American HS, FL) in the prelims.  He first qualified 2nd overall in the longer race, winning the 18th heat with his then-US#4 mark before Chance Stephenson took the 19th in 47.82 (see below).  That surpassed the 48.76 mark set by William Reed in 1985 and tied by Brian Herron on Jan. 2 of this year.  Then he won the 21st heat of the 200 with his then-US#3 time, again qualifying 2nd behind Will Allen’s 21.43 from heat 9.  Again, it was a Herron mark from two weeks earlier (21.84) that Cooper beat.  Then Cooper chose to bypass both finals, but then ran the 4x4 at the end (see below).  Also, Cooper won bronze at NBNO last June as an 8th grader with his 46.44 overall PR; and ran 20.94 later in the summer.
  • US#1 (#9 all-time) 8.28 girls’ 60m hurdles by Tonea Marshall (North Texas AC/Arlington Seguin, TX sr), winning decisively over, ruling over a field that included Jada Baylark (Little Rock Parkview, AR sr) in 2nd at US#8 8.60 and Ivone Walker (Performance TC/Mansfield Summit, TX sr) in 3rd at 8.79.  Marshall turned around moments later in the 60 dash final and ran US#7 7.55 for 2nd behind Kaylor Harris' US#1 (see below).
  • US#1 24-11.25 boys’ long jump by Harrison Schrage (Unatt./Grant OR sr), defeating defending Arkansas and NBNI champ Ja’Mari Ward (Cahokia TC/Cahokia IL sr), who was 2nd at US#4 24-6.5.  Schrage was 3rd at NBNI last March.  He got his winner on his 2nd attempt, as well as 24-9 on his 3rd, and was also 6th in the 60 final.
  • US#2 21.27 200m dash/ US#6 6.88 60m dash sprint double by Keshun Reed (Legendary TC/Arlington Martin, TX sr), the 200 just .02 off the national lead.  In that race, he edged prelims leader (21.43) Will Allen (Unatt./Paul Dunbar KY sr) at US#3 21.30.  Aaron Harris (Aurora Flyers/Lisle IL sr) nipped Trevin Chambers (X Factor Performance Training/DeSoto TX sr) for 3rd, 21.81 to 21.82.  In the 60, Reed was followed by Tyrec Grayson (Metro/) at 6.91, with prelims leader (6.88) Cameron Dawkins (Maximum Fitness/) just 4th.
  • US#1 7.48 60m dash / 18-5 long jump girls’ double by Kaylor Harris (Elite of Mesquite/Mesquite Horn TX jr).  She took the 60 over a deep field that included Tonea Marshall (North Texas AC/Arlington Seguin, TX sr) at US#7 7.55, Kira White (Lancaster Lightning/ DeSoto, TX sr) at 7.59 and Daja Gordon (MadFrogs/Dallas Hampton, TX jr) at 7.61.  Earlier, Harris won the LJ on her last attempt, followed by Angelica Lightfoot (Memphis Mustangs/Southwind TN sr) at 18-4 and Jernaya Sharp (Texas Express TC/Greenhill TX sr) at 18-3.25.
  • US#1 23.76 girls’ 200m dash prelim by Danyel White (Cedar Hill Blaze TC/Cedar Hill TX sr), improving her nation-leading mark from last week.  She was also 4th in the 60 prelims, but ran neither final as a preventative measure.
  • US#1 1:53.33 boys’ 800m run by Terrell Jackson (Memphis Mustangs/Memphis U. HS sr), pulling away from Kobey Hill (Fast and Furious Athletics/Memphis Bus. Acad. sr) at 1:55.87 and Ryne Bevan (Unatt./North Paulding, GA sr) at 1:55.95.
  • 3:16.44 boys’ 4x400m relay (US#1, including clubs) by Miami Gardens Xpress TC, with double frosh record-setter Tyrese Cooper anchoring in 47.34.  They edged Legendary TC at 3:17.05, which was anchored by 60/200 champ Keshun Reed in 47.48.  While those are the fastest times by U.S. prep clubs this year, Cahokia TC’s 3rd place time of 3:18.99 will stand as US#1 on the HS list due to all four runners being from the same school (Cahokia).
