NSAF Project Javelin thrower Sophia Rivera has announced she will compete in both the shot put and javelin finals at the IAAF World Youth Championships today, scheduled to start within five minutes of each other this evening in Cali, Columbia.

IAAF officials have said she is the first at any level of IAAF championship competition (Senior, Junior, Youth) to attempt two field events simultaneously.  Rivera made the decision after getting an auto-qualifier this morning on her 2nd shot put attempt after making the javelin final last night.  The events start at 5:30pm and 5:35pm CT tonight.

“I look at it as an adventure,” said Rivera, who previously threw the shot and jav together at this year’s Kansas Relays.  Rivera is a member of the NSAF’s Project Javelin.

In the shot put this year (high school weight), she is the NBNO and NBNI champion and led the national list both indoors and outdoors.  She has set a U.S. Youth record with the 3kg shot put in the Youth Trials to qualify for Worlds.  In the javelin, she has the #2 mark in the nation for U.S. high schools at 175-10 and won the U.S. Trials for this meet as well. #SophiesChoice
