Hottest sticks belong to 4x200 runners

  • US#1 1:35.93 girls’ D2 4x200m relay (#13 all-time) by the St. Thomas Aquinas, FL squad of Kristen Laidlaw, Diamond Spaulding, Alon Lewis and Krystal Sparling – defending their 2014 title and with half of the team that set the meet and HSR a year ago with 1:33.47 (which they later broke back in Florida at 1:33.43).  They won by more than 1.5 seconds over Houston Cypress Springs, TX (which would later win the 4x1) at US#2 1:37.59 and Cedar Hill, TX at 1:38.23 (already US#3 at 1:37.66 from prelims).
  • US#1 1:24.26 boys’ D2 4x200m relay (#17 all-time) by the Fort Bend Marshall, TX team of Cederian Lynch, Amere Lattin, Gerald Mills and Shamon Ehiemua.  Runner-up DeSoto, TX – champs here in 2012 and 2013 and overall national leader last year – had run a US#1 1:24.73 in the previous day’s prelims, but had to settle for 1:25.19 in the final – .003 ahead of Lancaster, TX (also 1:25.19).  FB Marshall, which also later won the 4x4, had won just one other title here before: the 2005 4x4.

Bray wins deep PV; another class record for Mondo

  • 17-1 boys’ pole vault for NBNI 3rd-place finisher Brandon Bray (China Spring, TX senior), winning on misses against a field with most of the nation’s top vaulters (he was already US#2 at 17-2).  In 2nd, Armand Duplantis (Lafayette, LA frosh) became the first 9th-grade 17-footer in history as he also cleared =US#4 17-1.  Bray needed three attempts to make 16-6.75, but then hit 17-1 on his first try while Duplantis did so on his 2nd.  Tommy Dial (Jenks, OK senior) also made =US#4 17-1, taking 3rd on misses.  All three missed at 17-5.  NBNI runner-up Paulo Benavides (El Paso Franklin, TX senior), the top vaulter in the field with his 17-11 PR which held the indoor HSR for five weeks, cleared his first bar at 16-6.75, but could not get 17-1 and settled for 4th.

Flood of (mostly windy) U.S. leaders in sprints, hurdles

  • US#1 (all-conditions) 13.27w(+4.0) girls’ 100m hurdles by Tonea Marshall (Arlington Seguin, TX junior), defeating defending champ Alexis Duncan (DeSoto, TX junior) – also the 2014 NBNO 100H champion – at 13.65w and Kimani Rushing (Hallandale, FL junior) at 13.66w.
  • US#1 (all-conditions) 11.27w(+4.4) girls’ 100m dash by NBNI 60m champ Teahna Daniels (1st Academy, FL senior), defending her 2014 title ahead of Khalifa St. Fort (St. Thomas Aquinas, FL junior) at 11.46w and Taylor Bennett (Klein Collins, TX senior) at 11.47w.
  • US#1 (all-conditions) 10.36w(+3.6) boys’ 100m dash by John Lewis (Willis, TX senior), leading London Dunn (DeSoto, TX soph) at 10.42w and Jacarias Martin (Katy Morton Ranch, TX senior) at 10.47w to the line, with three more under 10.60w.  Lewis also had a wind-legal 10.66(+0.0w) to lead qualifiers in the prelims.
  • US#1 36.10 boys’ 300m hurdles by Norman Grimes (Canyon, TX junior), winning the first-ever staging of the event at the Relays and leading three under 37 seconds.  He was followed by Isaiah Lucas (Houston Cypress Falls, TX junior) at US#2 36.56 and Antwuan Musgrove (Hallandale, FL senior) at US#3 36.72.  Three others ran 37.52 or faster.
  • US#1 41.89 girls’ 300m hurdles by Sami Gonzalez (Carrollton Creekview, TX senior), topping the US#2 42.06 from Kimani Rushing (Hallendale, FL junior) and US#4 42.29 by Sydne Fowler (Austin Westlake, TX senior), as five broke 43.00.  Like the boys’ 300H, it was the first time the event has been run in this meet.  Gonzalez was also 5th in the 100H.
  • US#1 13.63(+1.8w) boys’ 110m hurdles by Marcus McWilliams (Pflugerville, TX senior), nipping Chevis Armstead (DeSoto, TX senior) at US#2 13.64.  Five others were under 14 seconds, including Norman Grimes (Canyon, TX junior) – who won Friday’s 300H – in 3rd at US#4 13.78.
  • US#1 and meet record 50-8(+1.2w) boys’ triple jump by Kerwin Roach (Galena Park North Shore, TX senior) – who had four legal jumps over 50 feet.  He was trailed by Charles Brown (Wichita Falls Hirschi, TX senior) at US#2 49-7.5(+1.7w) and Altany Wilson (Del Valle, TX senior) at US#3 (all-conditions) 48-5.5w(+2.5).  Wilson also had a 47-4.75 jump with a 1.4 wind that makes him US#3 on the main list.
  • US#1 40-11.5(+1.5w) girls’ triple jump by Tara Davis (Agoura, CA soph), going from 3rd to 1st on her last jump to beat a great field – including NBNI champ Asa Garcia (Texas City, TX senior) at US#2 40-8.5(+1.4w), Kimani Rushing (Hallendale, FL junior) at US#3 40-2.25(+0.9w) and NSAF Project Triple Jumper Felicienne Axel (Columbus, TX senior) at US#4 39-10.25(+1.2w).  Davis was also 2nd in the long jump.  Garcia had led from the 2nd jump, but followed with a pass and three fouls.
  • US#1 19-9.5(+0.0w) girls’ long jump by Samiyah Samuels (Houston Cypress Springs, TX junior), winning on her first jump and followed by triple jump winner Tara Davis (Agoura, CA soph) at US#2 19-7(-0.4w) and Kaylee Hinton (Rockwall, TX senior) at 19-0.25(-1.3w).
  • US#1 11:57.49 girls’ distance medley relay by the Lewisville Marcus, TX team of Hannah Bradley, Bridget Tobias, Quinn Owen and Maddy Reed – who was also 2nd in the 3,200.  They topped powerhouse Great Oak, CA at US#3 12:05.55 and Lewisville Hebron, TX at US#7 12:14.66.
  • US#1 9:20.25 girls’ 4x800m relay by the Spring Branch Smithson Valley, TX squad of Cassidi Clark, Reagan Bachman, Kerri Welch and Devin Clark – who had won the 1,600 the night before.  They won a close battle with Katy, TX at US#2 9:20.98, with Great Oak, CA 3rd at US#7 9:26.24.
  • US#1 6:06.99 boys’ 2,000m steeplechase by Samuel Worley (NB Canyon, TX soph), with Dominic Baptiste (Klein, TX senior) a few ticks back at 6:09.15.

More Relays: Marshall completes double
  • US#2 3:14.05 boys’ 4x400m relay by the Fort Bend Marshall, TX team of John Isom, Amere Lattin, Jeremy Smith and Gerald Mills, completing the 4x2/4x4 double.  They last won the event in 2005.  They were followed by Manvel, TX at US#3 3:14.50 and US-leading (3:13.28) American Christian, FL at 3:15.33.  Marshall and American had led qualifying with 3:14.31 and 3:14.77.
  • US#2 3:46.27 girls’ 4x400m relay by the Lancaster, TX quartet of Jania Garrett, Tylantiss Atlas, Alicia Harris and Taylor Rockwell, followed by Fort Bend Hightower, TX at 3:47.51 and 4x1 champs Houston Cypress Springs at 3:49.88.  Lancaster, which won last in 2008 and 2012 here, was just 4th in qualifying behind 2-time defending champs St. Thomas Aquinas, FL at then-US#3 3:46.44 and Cy Springs at then-US#4 3:46.99 – but Lancaster was far superior in the final.
  • 40.92 boys’ 4x100m relay by the DeSoto, TX squad of Charles Butler, Trevin Chambers, LaDarren Brown and London Dunn, just off their US#2 40.89 but winning with room to spare over pre-meet US#1 Lancaster, TX at 41.44, Mansfield Legacy, TX at 41.56 and Manvel, TX – also at 41.56.  Lancaster came in as defending champ and leading the nation at 40.87 from their own invite where they nipped DeSoto by .02.  DeSoto, on the other hand, has now won four of the last six Texas Relays 4x1s.
  • US#4 46.18 girls’ 4x100m relay by the Houston Cypress Springs, TX quartet of Trameceia Sample, Essance Sample, Sierra Smith and Samiyah Samuels.  They were followed by Cedar Hill, TX at US#7 46.57 and Converse Judson, TX at 47.19.  It was the first Texas Relays win in any event for Cy Springs.
  • US#6 7:55.84 boys’ 4x800m relay by the Houston Strake Jesuit, TX team of Zachary Agee, Matthew Abrahams, Jeffrey Price and Andrew HebertEdinburg Vela, TX was the only other team under 8:00 with its 7:58.80.  Strake Jesuit still holds the meet record at 7:40.56 from 1980, when they started a 4-year winning streak.
  • 10:29.58 boys’ distance medley relay by The Woodlands, TX team of Daniel Golden, Aidan Ownby, Noah Wells and Matthew McClellan – finishing just .22 ahead of Southlake Carroll, TX’s 10:29.80.  Houston Cypress Woods, TX was 3rd with 10:32.17.

More Individual Track: Super close (and fast) 3,200s
  • US#2 10:19.23 girls’ 3,200m run by Julia Heymach (Houston Lamar, TX soph), just edging Maddy Reed (FM Marcus, TX junior) at US#3 10:19.36.  They were more than 26 seconds clear of the field.  Heymach had just finished 3rd in the NBNI 2M two weeks ago.
  • US#2 4:47.49 girls’ 1,600m run by Devin Clark (SB Smithson Valley, TX senior), winning by a decisive six seconds over Madie Boreman (Leander Rouse, TX junior) at 4:53.49.  Defending champ Aaliyah Miller (McKinley Boyd, TX junior) was 3rd at 4:55.50.  Clark also anchored the winning 4x800.
  • US#4 8:58.53 boys’ 3,200m run by Alex Rogers (NB Canyon, TX senior), setting a 15-second PR and nipping favored US#2 8:57.01 performer Carter Blunt (Frisco Independence, TX junior) at 8:58.62.  The rest of the field was more than 20 seconds back.
  • 4:15.70 boys’ 1,600m run by Pedro Nasta (John Cooper, TX senior), just ahead of Jose Viegra (Pflugerville Hendrickson, TX senior) at 4:15.89 and with Reed Brown (Southlake Carroll, TX soph) 3rd at 4:16.33.
  • 7:26.60 girls’ 2,000m steeplechase by Marissa Flournoy (Austin Bowie, TX junior), almost five seconds ahead of Marissa Bartello (Laguna Hills, CA senior) at 7:31.44.

More Individual Field: Gordon doubles; good boys JT; Piperi shines
  • 147-10 discus, 47-9.75 shot put 2-day girls’ throws double by Meia Gordon (Houston Cypress Creek, TX senior).  Gordon stood US#2 in each event (160-7 and 48-2) coming in.  She was followed by Celine Markert (Yoakum, TX senior) at US#5 147-5 and Nora Monie (Sharyland Pioneer, TX senior) at US#8 144-1 in the discus, and Chyna Otis (Killeen Harker Heights, TX junior) at 44-5 and Tyjae Scales (Kinkaid School, TX senior) at 44-0.75 in the shot. 
  • US#2 198-3 boys’ javelin Saturday by William Peterson (Frisco Centennial, TX senior), edging Travis Toliver (Episcopal-Bellaire, TX senior) at US#3 198-0.  The rest of the field was more than 35 feet back.
  • US#2 63-0.75 boys’ shot put Saturday by Adrian Piperi (The Woodlands, TX soph), winning by nearly six feet over Dilland Gardner (DeSoto, TX senior) at 57-1.5, with Tristan Zaragoza (San Antonio Highlands, TX senior) 3rd at 56-4.
  • US#4 182-10 boys’ discus Friday by Colin Echols (Coppell, TX junior), winning by nearly a dozen feet over Adrian Piperi (The Woodlands, TX soph) at 170-11.  Another soph, Oladipo Gabriel (FB Hightower, TX), was 3rd at 167-3.  Piperi, whose seasonal best is US#8 179-7, would go on to win the shot put Saturday.
  • US#4 23-4.75(+1.5w) boys’ long jump Friday by Jay Bradford (Splendora, TX senior), who also won the D2 100m dash.  He won by just a quarter inch over Steffin McCarter (Lampasas, TX senior) at US#5 23-4.5(+0.4w), while Pearson Feagans (Dallas Highland Park, TX senior) was 3rd at 22-7.75(-1.1w).
  • US#6 5-9.5 girls’ high jump by Alexus Henry (Bridge City, TX junior), beating three others at 5-7.5.
  • US#8 12-11 girls’ pole vault by Nicole Summersett (Austin Westlake, TX senior), beating Colleen Clancy (SB Smithson Valley, TX soph) and Meagan Gray (Buda Hays, TX senior), also at 12-11.  Summersett and Clancy actually wound up in a jump-off after each missed three times at 13-3.  They were given three more attempts at 13-3, missing those, then each missed thrice at 13-1.25.  The bar went down to 12-9, where Summersett cleared and got the win.
  • 6-9 boys’ high jump by Charles Brown (Wichita Falls Hirschi, TX senior), finishing ahead of four others at 6-7.
  • 115-9 girls’ javelin by Avery Ellis-Byerly (Austin Bowie, TX junior), beating Kristeny Magallanes (Gonzales, TX junior) at 113-2.

  • B-100m: 10.49w(+6.9) by Jay Bradford (Splendora, TX senior), rising from 3rd in 2014 and topping Quentin Dancer (West, TX junior) at 10.57w.
  • G-100m: 11.63w(+3.2) by defending champ Kortnei Johnson (Italy, TX sr), beating Daja Gordon (Dallas Hampton Prep, TX soph) at 11.71.
  • B-110mH: 14.24w(+5.1) by Dillon Springfield (Springtown, TX senior), beating Parker Johnson (2nd Baptist, TX senior) at 14.46.
  • G-100mH: 14.09w(+5.6) by Jernaya Sharp (Greenhill School, TX junior), nipping Kyra Anderson (St. Mary’s, CA senior) at 14.10.  Sharp was also 3rd in the D1 100m dash.
  • B-4x100m: 43.04 by the Dallas Carter, TX team of Bernard Goodwater, Reginald Cole, Keith Johnson and Demarviae Gray, defeating Liberty Christian, TX at 43.16.
  • G-4x100m: Meet record (D1) 46.82 by the St. Mary’s, CA team of Anaiah Brown, Aliyah Hale, Briana Shufford and Keyshawna Myles, edging Dallas Hampton Prep, TX – also under the MR at 46.90.
  • B-4x200m: 1:29.20 by the Liberty Christian, TX team of Drew Hunnicutt, Dakota Sanchez, Justus Less and Givon Washington, beating Andrews, TX at 1:29.51.
  • G-4x200m: 1:42.54 by the St. Mary’s, CA team of Aliyah Hale, Keyshawna Myles, Mia Williams and Kyra Anderson, winning by more than a second over Sweeny, TX at 1:43.79.
  • B-4x400: 3:25.31 by the Mineola, TX team of Dalton Harris, Preston Williams, Kartney Hampton and Brent Wells, beating qualifying leader (3:24.19) Splendora, TX at 3:26.57.
  • G-4x400m: 4:03.08 by the St. Mary’s, CA team of Aliyah Hale, Kyra Anderson, Mia Williams and Briana Shufford, completing their 4x2/4x1/4x4 sweep.  Liberty Hill, TX was 2nd at 4:05.54.
