2015 NBNI Athletes of the Meet: Ja’Mari Ward and Ryen Frazier

by Steve Underwood

The 2015 New Balance Nationals Indoor Boys’ Athlete of the Meet honors went to Ja’Mari Ward (Cahokia, IL junior) after his sweep of the horizontal jumps, setting a meet and Armory record in the long jump, hitting US#1s in both and moving high on the all-time lists.  The NSAF Project Triple Jumper leapt a PR 25-7.25 in Saturday’s LJ, #6 all-time, crushing the field by almost 18 inches and with three jumps better than anyone else had.  He completed the double with a 51-7.75 TJ, winning by 9 inches and, again, with 3 better jumps than anyone else had.  His PR and Armory record made him #11 all-time and was less than 4 inches off the meet record.  Ja’Mari, already the freshman- and sophomore-class national record-holder in the TJ, came within half an inch of the junior class mark.  He’s also now within two inches of the junior class LJ nat’l record.

The 2015 New Balance Nationals Indoor Girls’ Athlete of the Meet honors went to Ryen Frazier (Ravenscroft, NC senior) after she won the 2-mile and had two other runner-up finishes.  Frazier’s victory came in Sunday’s 2-mile, a dominating US#1 10:02.36 (#5 all-time), winning by more than 17 seconds.  She passed 3k in US#1 9:23.68, #6 all-time.   Earlier, Frazier was a close runner-up Friday’s 5,000m run, clocking US#2 16:12.81 – #3 all-time and the fastest non-winning performance ever – close behind Anna Rohrer’s HSR.  Then after her 2M win on Sunday, she came back about an hour later for the mile and was 2nd behind Nevada Moreno with her 4:44.48.  Besides, Lukas Verzbicas, who swept these events in 2011, no one has performed like this in an NBN 5k/2M/1M triple attempt.
