Youth Olympic Americas team, potential U.S. qualifiers and others: post-South American Trials update

by Jim Spier

The Youth Olympic Trails in Miramar, Florida on April 4-5 was the first of three meets to select athletes for the "Americas" team -- which will compete in Nanjing, China at the second Youth Olympic Games, August 16-28, 2014.  The Americas continental team includes athletes from North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean.  The Miramar trials meet brought together athletes from 10 of those countries vying for spots, such as the U.S., Mexico, Canada and others.  The Apr. 18-21 CARIFTA Games in Martinique was the 2nd qualifying meet and, this past weekend, the final qualifying meet -- the South American Trials -- took place in Cali, Columbia.

We've previously published files to give context to those results and a sense of the YOG qualifying chances for the top finishers in each event. Now we update those files to include ALL possible qualifiers from the three Trials meets.

First, a specific analysis of the current U.S. prospects and what has to happen now before the team selections can be finalized (PDF file): Post Trials Analysis (5/19).

Then, the updated chart of the BOYS Youth Americas status May 19 update and the GIRLS Youth Americas status May 19 update (both PDF files).

Finally, a list of Area Qualifiers by Country for the Americas for the Youth Olympic Games.
