Four team champions crowned

  • 2A Boys: Sprint powerhouse Miami Washington tallied 61 to finish 22 ahead of Fla. State Univ. School’s 39.  Hallendale was 3rd with 33.  Washington rose from 2nd in 2013, having last won the title when they shared 3A with Miami Jackson in 2007.
  • 2A Girls: Bolles scored 66 to edge Hallendale by one as the 4-year reign of American Heritage ended.  Pine Crest was 3rd with 44.  Bolles last won a title in 1998, when they won 3A in the 6-class setup.
  • 1A Boys: Westminster Academy scored a whopping 96.5 to top First Academy’s 90, as the two schools ate up a large percentage of the points.  North Florida Christian took 3rd with 49.5.  Westminster won for the 1st time since 2008, while First Academy was runner-up for the 2nd straight year.
  • 1A Girls: Holy Trinity wins for the 4th time in 9 years, moving up from 2nd in 2013.  They scored 70.5 points to win decisively as Evangelical Christian 43 nipped Oak Hall School 42, with two others at 40 points.

Top 2A/1A performances

  • 11.74 100m dash(+0.7w), US#4 23.68 200m(+1.9w) girls’ 1A sprint double for Teahna Daniels (First Academy junior), winning both by big margins as Holy Trinity senior twin sisters Dareth Gayles at 12.16 and Gabrielle Gayles at 24.50 took the 2nd-place spots.
  • US#7 37.12 boys’ 2A 300m hurdles by Ahmad Middleton (Dunedin senior), beating Antwuan Musgrove (Hallandale junior) at 37.58.  Middleton was also 3rd in the long jump.
  • US#11 54.60 girls’ 1A 400m dash by Gabrielle Gayles (Holy Trinity senior), winning by a whopping 3.45 seconds.  She was also 2nd in the 200 behind Teahna Daniels.

Great doubles

  • 10.73 100m dash(+0.7w), 21.22 200m boys’ 2A sprint double for Nigel Bethel II (Miami Washington senior).  He also ran legs on Washington’s winning 4x100 (41.19) and 2nd-place 4x400.  Josh Davis (Florida High senior) was 2nd in both races at 10.80 and 21.48.
  • 42.61 4x100m, 3:19.69 4x400m boys’ 1A relay double by First Academy, the former with the team of Theodore Washington, Michael Timpson Jr., Mason Plante and Jahquez Durham, and the latter again with Timpson, Plante and Durham, plus Julian Middleton.
  • 48.17 400m dash, 21.59 200m(+1.4w) boys’ 1A sprint double by Christian Philpott (North Fla. Christian junior).  He beat Andrew James (Westminster Academy junior) at 48.55 in the 400, and topped 100 champ Michael Timpson, Jr. (First Academy junior) at 21.69 in the 200.
  • 38-1(nwi) triple jump, 43.36 300m hurdles girls’ 2A double by Kimani Rushing (Hallandale soph).  She outleaned junior teammate Lamisha Simmons at 43.45 in the hurdles, with 100H champ Stefani Kerrison (Jones senior) at 43.57 a very close 3rd.  Rushing’s TJ victory was by more than a foot and she was also 3rd in the 100H.
  • 4:22.33 1600m run, 9:26.01 3200m boys’ 1A distance double for Franco Martins (Windermere junior), winning both by big margins.
  • 14.83 100mH(+1.8w), 46.44 300mH girls’ 1A hurdles double by Brittany McGee (Admiral Farragut junior), winning each with room to spare over Cheyanne Hevey (Foundation junior) at 15.67 and Kristi Isabelle (South Fla. senior) at 47.35.
  • 14.67 110mH(+0.1w), 39.74 300mH boys’ 1A hurdles double by Michael Taylor (First Academy senior), beating Gabriel Moore (Freeport senior) 14.92 in the former, and outleaning Christopher Jackson (FAMU HS soph) 39.89 in the latter.
  • 9:35.22 4x800m, 4:02.19 4x400m girls’ relay double by Oak Hall School, winning the former with Brittany Olinger, Nadiria Evans, Grace Blair and Lindsay Rosenberg, and the latter again with Evans, Rosenberg and Blair, plus Ansley Green.
  • 117-10 discus, 36-8.75 shot put girls’ 1A throws double by Hunter Sullivan (John Carroll senior), taking close battles in each.

More top performances

  • 41.19 boys’ 2A 4x100m relay by the US#1 (previous 40.57) Miami Washington team of Terrawn McPhee, Deltron Hopkins, Krondis Larry and Nigel Bethel II.  They were trailed by Cocoa HS at 41.78 and Glades Central at 41.99.
  • 9:15.19 girls’ 2A 4x800m relay by Bolles team of Lily Arnold, Jasmine Burkett, Mackenzie Wilson and Caitlyn Collier, winning by more than 15 seconds over Pine Crest 9:31.75.
  • 16-0 boys’ 2A pole vault by Harry Glasser (Bolles senior), beating David Bell (Bishop Kenny junior) by a foot and a half.  Glasser went out after three attempts at 16-6.25.
  • 54.87 girls’ 2A 400m dash for Caitlin Wilson (Godby senior), ruling the field by 2.61 seconds.
  • 14.02 girls’ 2A 100m hurdles by Stefani Kerrison (Jones senior), followed by long jump champ Danielle Phillips (Rockledge senior) at 14.15 and triple jump champ Kimani Rushing (Hallandale soph) at 14.22.
  • 19-5(nwi) girls’ 2A long jump by Danielle Phillips (Rockledge senior), winning by more than a foot.
  • 19-2.5(nwi) girls’ 1A long jump by Daryth Gayles (Holy Trinity senior), who was also 2nd in the 100.  She topped Darrielle McQueen (North Fla. Christian senior) 18-6 in the LJ.
  • 22-5.75(nwi) boys’ 1A long jump by Gabriel Moore (Freeport senior), the World Youth team octathlete last year who also was 2nd in the 110H, 3rd in the PV and 7th in the DT.
  • 38-6.25(nwi) girls’ 1A triple jump by Darrielle McQueen (North Fla. Christian senior), the NSAF Project Triple Jumper’s 5th straight title in the event.  She was also 2nd in the LJ.
  • 47-7(nwi) boys’ 2A triple jump for Gino Brown, Jr. (Chaminade senior), triumphing by nearly two feet.
  • 5-7 girls’ 2A high jump for Edquisha Alvin (Hallandale senior), beating three others who cleared 5-4.
  • 12-0 girls’ 2A pole vault for Nicole Carroll (Tampa Catholic soph), winning by six inches over Nati Sheppard (Ransom senior).
  • 2:13.54 girls’ 2A 800m run for 8th-grader Caitlyn Collier (Bolles), barely outkicking Madison Harris (Wakulla senior) 2:13.59.

Class 2A Boys

  • HJ: Senior Corion Knight led a 1-2 for Wakulla as he and soph teammate Keith Gavin each cleared 6-4.
  • LJ: Jonah Daniels (Episcopal School junior) nipped Jay Hopson (Pahokee senior), 22-2.75 to 22-2.25 (both nwi).
  • SP and DT: Dane Stolsig (West Florida junior) and Rashodd Hadley (Baker County senior) traded 1-2 finishes, with Stolsig taking the discus, 158-11 to 158-2, and Hadley prevailing in the shot, 55-0 to 54-11.
  • 110H: Raekwon Marrow (Wolfson junior) got past John Battle (Hallandale senior), 14.57 to 14.63(+0.3w).
  • 4x800: Pine Crest team of Noah Srour, Troy Gonzalez, Ryan Welch and John Decker ran 8:08.19, taking it by 3.03 seconds over West Florida Tech 8:11.22.
  • 400: Krondis Larry (Miami Washington senior) hit 48.74, beating Justin Crapps (Rockledge senior).
  • 800: John Decker (Pine Crest senior) came from behind to edge Jesse Wear (Monteverde Acad.) by .02, 1:54.95 to 1:54.97.
  • 1600: Gaby Correa (Ransom soph) ran 4:21.41, holding off Chris Shaffer (Satellite senior) 4:22.17.
  • 3200: Leonel Delacruz (Immokalee senior) came back from 3rd to win in 9:29.17 on a wild last lap sprint.

Class 2A Girls

  • DT: Phoebe Gustely (American Heritage junior) threw 126-3, giving herself a more than 3-foot cushion on the field.
  • SP: Jhane Carter (Astronaut senior) threw 43-6, taking it by almost two feet.
  • 100 and 200: Deanna Hill (Lake Highland senior) and Alfreda Steele (Pasco soph) traded 1-2 finishes, with Hill winning the 100, 11.94 to 11.99(+0.5w) and Steele taking the 200, 24.05 to 24.13(+1.2w).
  • 4x100: Rockledge ran 47.77, with Asia Gonzalez, Kylee Cobbs-Marcus, Danielle Phillips and Kaira Simmons, winning by more than a second.
  • 4x400: Miami Jackson clocked 3:58.15, with Kimberly Bendross, Tiara McMinn, Daesha Rogers and Shamaria Lovett, ahead of Calvary Christian 3:58.89.
  • 1600 and 3200:  Julia Montgomery (Pine Crest soph) and Mackenzie Wilson (Bolles soph) traded 1-2 finishes as Montgomery won the 16, 5:03.34 to 5:03.57, and Wilson the 32 with 10:50.95 to 10:51.66.

Class 1A Boys

  • HJ: Terrell Phillips (Westminster senior) won with 6-2.
  • PV: Drew McMichael (Evangelical junior) soared over 14-6, beating Armand Woodley 14-0.
  • TJ: Jonathan Saintil (Dade Christian) leapt 44-5.25(nwi) on his last attempt to win by almost a foot.
  • DT: Alan McFarland (Father Lopez senior) dominated with 167-9.
  • SP: Chris Miller (First Academy senior) won on his first throw with 53-9.5.
  • 100: Michael Timpson, Jr. dashed 11.01(+0.5w), the junior leading a First Academy 1-2 with soph Jahquez Durham 11.11.
  • 4x800: Maclay took it in 8:09.03 with the quartet of James Connor Daughton, Jack Rutledge, Steven Simpkins and George Gwinn.
  • 800: Daniel Welch (Holy Trinity junior) just edged Oscar Skjaerpe (Tampa Prep), 1:56.96 to 1:57.00.

Class 1A Girls

  • HJ: Desiree’ Nathe (Bishop McLaughlin senior) and Brooke Allen (Cedar Key senior) both cleared 5-2, with Nathe winning on misses.
  • PV: Bobbi LaBrant (Indian Rocks) won by a foot with 10-0.
  • 4x100: Holy Trinity won by more than a second at 49.04 with the team of Gabrielle Gayles, Daryth Gayles, Alsiha Pound and McKenzie Kilborne.
  • 800: Emily Stallings (Providence School senior) kicked to victory in 2:17.67, ahead of Evangelical 6th-grader Sierra Oliveira’s 2:19.44.  Stallings was also 2nd in the 1600.
  • 1600: Sarah Candiano (Evangelical junior) won by 2.61 seconds in 5:04.79.
  • 3200: Grace Casagrande (Cardinal Mooney senior) ran 11:01.54, outpacing Emily Chapman (Brevard junior) 11:05.70.
