Arcadia Saturday Highlights: Top athletes to Efraimson, Haney; Bonds, Scarvelis double; 10 US#1s

National leaders, meet records and great doubles and triples!

  • US#1 and meet record 9:55.92 girls’ 3,200 run for Alexa Efraimson (Camas, WA junior), #5 all-time (incl. 2M conversions) as she kicked away in the last lap (67.9) from a trio that was closing in on her.  Efraimson was named Girls’ Athlete of the Meet.  US#2-10 for the next 9 finishers, as the next 3 broke 10:05 and 14 were under 10:30 and 24 under 10:40.  Following Efraimson was Allie Ostrander (Kenai, AK junior) with an Alaskan record 10:03.66 (#15 all-time), Bethan Knights (Northwood, CA senior) 10:04.05 (#16 all-time) and Anna Maxwell (San Lorenzo Valley, CA senior) 10:04.81 (#20 all-time). Efraimson also ran a US#1 9:23.24 3k en route.
  • US#1 8:46.80 boys’ 3,200m run for Blake Haney (Stockton, CA senior), winning by more than three seconds and leading a record 19 athletes under 9:00 (20, including seeded race; most ever at Arcadia or any other meet).  Haney, who was named Boys’ Athlete of the Meet, finished in 58.68, 2:00.57, 4:16.20, pulling away from the field.  US#2-8 for next seven runners, including an Idaho record 8:50.55 for Andrew Rafla (Timberline, senior), 8:50.88 for co-favorite and US#1 miler Cerake Geberkidane (Denver East, senior), 8:51.53 for previous US#1 (8:53.99) Ian Midler (Mt. Tabor, NC senior), 8:52.18 for previous CA state leader Garrett Corcoran (Villa Park, senior) and a big PR 8:52.90 for NBNI 5,000 champ Conner Mantz (Sky View, UT junior).  Haney also ran a US#1 8:16.75 3k en route.
  • US#3 41.35 300m hurdles, US#3 13.65 100m hurdles (+1.9w) invitational girls’ double for Tiana Bonds (Centennial, NV senior) – who also was 2nd in the heptathlon Thursday and Friday!!  Three others finished under 14 in the 100s, including Pattriana Perry (Vacaville, CA senior) US#5 13.67, Jasmyne Graham (Roosevelt, CA junior) 13.79 and, from the seeded race, Jaela Williams (Roosevelt, CA junior) 13.97.  In the 300H, three others ran faster than 42.5, including Hannah Labrie-Smith (Cathedral, CA junior) US#7 42.24, Jasmine Stauffacher-Gray (North Canyon, AZ junior) 42.46 and Kymber Payne (Long Beach Poly, CA senior) 42.49.
  • US#1 172-7 discus / 52-1.25 meet record shot put (already US#2 53-5) girls’ throws double by Stamatia Scarvelis (Dos Pueblos, CA senior), with the discus being a huge PR.  She was followed in both throws by friendly rival and future teammate (UCLA) Ashlie Blake (Liberty, NV senior) – who threw US#2 166-1 and 51-4.75 (already US#3).
  • US#1 and meet record 6-2 girls’ invitational high jump by Vashti Cunningham (Bishop Gorman, NV soph), =#11 all-time and just a quarter-inch shy of the nat’l soph class record!  She was followed by Claire Kieffer-Wright (South Pasadena, CA senior) US#2 6-0 and Britten Durden (Morgan, UT junior) US#8 5-9.
  • US#1 20.84 boys’ invitational 200m dash (+0.0w) by Paul Lucas (Mountain Pointe, AZ junior), turning the tables on Curtis Godin (Mater Dei, CA senior), who ran US#3 21.03 for 2nd.  Lucas had finished 2nd in the 100 to Godin, 10.36 to 10.48, but here he regained the national lead that he previously had captured with his Chandler Rotary Invite victory.  Robert Grant (Brophy Prep, AZ senior), who had won the 300H shortly before, was 3rd with 21.51.
  • US#1 53.47 girls’ invitational 400m dash for Kaelin Roberts (Long Beach Poly, CA frosh), who also led off Poly’s winning 4x400 with a 53.5.  She was followed by Madeline Price (Menlo, CA senior) US#2 53.43, who was also 2nd in the 200.
  • US#1 36.47 boys’ invitational 300m for Robert Grant (Brophy Prep, AZ senior), followed by Marquis Morris (DeLaSalle, CA senior) US#3 36.94.  Grant was also 3rd in the 200 at 21.51, and anchored his school’s winning 4x110m shuttle hurdle relay and runner-up 4x400 (seeded race).  Morris was also runner-up in the 110H.
  • US#1 20-1.5 girls’ long jump (+0.7w) for Margaux Jones (Redlands, CA junior), winning by more than six inches over Rhesa Foster (Clovis North, CA soph) US#3 19-6.75 (+1.0w).  Michelle Norman (Vista Murrieta, CA senior) was 3rd at 19-2.25 (+1.5w).

  • 25-0.5 boys’ invitational long jump (+1.4w) by Adoree’ Jackson (Serra Gardena, CA senior), already US#1 at 25-5.25, and who took just two attempts as he injured his hamstring.  US#2 24-10 (+1.4w) for Joey Souza (Kingsburg, CA junior) in 2nd after going for broke on his final jump.
  • US#2 13.93 (13.922) boys’ invitational 110m hurdles (+0.8w) for Misana Viltz (Millikan, CA senior), nipping Marquis Morris (DeLaSalle, CA senior) at US#3 13.93 (13.923) by the slimmest of margins.  Third-fastest of the day was seeded section winner Eric Simpson (Rogers, WA) at 14.11.  Morris was later the 300H runner-up.
  • US#2 4:09.32 boys’ invitational mile for Ricky Faure (Rock Springs, WY senior), overhauling Nathan Rodriguez (Corona del Sol, AZ senior) US#4 4:10.46 with a 57 last quarter.  Ellis Newton (Mayfair, CA senior) was 3rd at 4:12.67.
  • US#2 10:09.63 boys’ invitational distance medley relay for Redondo Union CA (Nicolas Wells, Sergio Rodriguez, Raymone Radi, Dustin Herold), winning an incredibly close 4-way battle as anchor Dustin Herold closed in 4:11.99.  Following closely in US#3-4-5 were Central Catholic OR 10:09.82, Centennial NV 10:09.94 and Palos Verdes CA 10:09.98.
  • 65-1.75 boys’ invitational shot put for Dotun Ogundji (Madison, CA senior), already US#2, to win on his final throw ahead of Matt Katnik (St. John’s Bosco, CA junior) US#6 64-4.25.
  • US#3 10.36 boys’ invitational 100m dash (+1.2w) by Curtis Godin (Mater Dei, CA senior), followed by Paul Lucas (Mountain Pointe, AZ junior) in 2nd at US#5 10.48 and Isaiah Brandt-Sims (Wenatchee, WA senior) in 3rd at 10.65.  Godin also was 2nd to Lucas in the 200 at US#3 21.03 (+0.0w) and ran a leg on Mater Dei’s 3rd-place 4x100.
  • US#3 (all-conditions) 11.38w girls’ invitational 200m (+2.1) for Ariana Washington (Long Beach Poly, CA senior).  She also anchored Friday’s winning 800 SMR and Poly’s 3rd-place 4x100.  Destiny Smith-Barnett (Skyline, CA senior) was 2nd at 11.64w and the 3rd-best mark of the meet came from seeded section winner Kaysha Love (Herriman, UT soph) at 11.75 (-0.1w).
  • US#3 196-1 boys’ invitational discus throw for Throw 1 Deep’s Daniel Haugh (St. Pius X, GA senior), beating US#2-ranked Reno Tuufuli (Liberty, NV senior; 196-10 PR), who was 2nd at 188-10.  Malik McNorris (Mater Dei, CA junior) was 3rd at 182-4.
  • US#3 49-1.25 boys’ invitational triple jump (+1.5w) by CJ Alumbres (Vista Murrieta, CA junior), just nipping Scotty Newton (Bakersfield, CA senior) on his final jump.  Newton leapt US#4 49-1 (+1.0w) and Karsten Wethington (James Logan, CA senior) was a very close 3rd at US#5 48-10.25 (+1.6w).
  • US#3 11:58.53 girls’ invitational distance medley relay for Buchanan CA, pulling away on the last lap over Redondo Union CA 12:08.00.  Canyon Crest Academy CA was 3rd at 12:10.82.
  • 13-6 girls’ invitational pole vault for Kaitlyn Merritt (Santa Margarita Catholic, CA junior).  Already US#3 at 13-9, she tried a national junior class record 14-1.25 after clearing her winning height.  Greta Wagner (Los Gatos, CA senior) at 12-10 and McKenna Caskey (Mater Dei, CA frosh) at 12-2 were 2nd and 3rd.
  • US#4 40-9 girls’ invitational triple jump (+1.8w) for Ashley Anderson (Carson, CA senior), winning by more than a foot over Marisa Kwiatkowski (Wilcox, CA senior) at 39-5.25 (+1.6w).  Third was Lovie Burleson (Vista Murrieta, CA junior) at 39-0.25 (+0.7w).
  • US#4 47.35 boys’ invitational 400m dash for Frank Kurtz (Heritage, CA senior), defeating Taylor McLaughlin (Union Catholic, NJ junior) 47.49 in 2nd.  The 3rd-fastest time of the meet went to seeded section winner Michael Norman (Vista Murrieta, CA soph) at 47.56.
  • US#5 7-0 boys’ invitational high jump for Steven Dunbar (Tallwood, VA senior), edging US co-leader Randall Cunningham, Jr. (Bishop Gorman, NV senior) on misses (also 7-0).  Eric Moore (Carter, CA senior) was 3rd with 6-10.
  • US#5 2:10.06 girls’ invitational 800m run for Mikaela Smith (Clovis North, CA junior), holding off Hannah Derby (Bellarmine Prep, WA senior) US#7 2:10.59.  Smith the day before anchored her team’s 4x800 to victory.  Third-fastest of the meet went to Jacquelyn Hill (Etiwanda, CA frosh), winner of an earlier section, at 2:11.93.

  • US#6 16-8 boys’ invitational pole vault for Carl Johansson (Orange Lutheran, CA senior), beating August Kiles (Tamalpais, CA senior) 16-0.
  • US#7 boys’ invitational 4x400m relay for Los Angeles Dorsey CA (Jermale Jefferson, Daniel Lawson, Tyron McCraw, Brandon James), winning a tough battle with Hercules CA US#9 3:15.50.  Riverton UT was 3rd at 3:16.22.
  • US#8 4:50.68 girls’ invitational mile for Lucy Biles (Herriman, UT junior), nipping Danielle Jones (Desert Vista, AZ junior) US#9 4:50.81.  Malia Ellington (Davidson, NC junior), the Youth Olympic Trials 1,500 champ last week, was 3rd in 4:52.44, nipping Lakeside, WA super frosh Sophie Cantine 4:52.62.
  • 3:47.23 girls’ 4x400m relay for Long Beach Poly (Kaelin Roberts 53.5 leadoff, Hollie Harris, Autumn Wright, Ebony Crear), already US#2 (3:42.84) winning by more than three seconds over Mater Dei CA 3:52.02.  Second-fastest of the meet was seeded section winner St. Mary’s CA at 3:50.15.
  • US#9 24.11 girls’ 200m dash (+0.5w) by Kaysha Love (Herriman, UT soph), triumphing over Madeline Price (Menlo, CA senior) 24.52.  Third went to Jasmine Stauffacher-Gray (North Canyon, AZ junior) in 24.63.  Love was earlier 3rd in the 100, Price 2nd in the 400 and Stauffacher-Gray 3rd in the 300H. 
  • US#10 46.72 girls’ 4x100m relay for St. Mary’s, CA (Allanah Hughes, Aliyah Hale, Briana Shufford, Sierra Peterson), edging Roosevelt CA 46.79 and favored Long Beach Poly CA (also) 46.79.
  • 41.57 boys’ 4x100m relay for Upland, CA (Tyrin Wells, Myles Valentine, Antonio Woodward, Domonique Mosley), running the day’s best time from the seeded section.  In the invitational section, Loyola CA topped Edison CA, 41.61 to 41.69, while favored Serra CA was slowed after Adoree Jackson’s hamstring injury crippled him in the 3rd leg.
