400m Hurdles Qualifying – Girls (top 4 and next 4 fastest advance to the semis)

Samantha Gonzalez (Creekview, Carrollton, TX) won her heat and advanced automatically.  She was running against world leader, Lisa-Marie Jacoby of Germany who led through 8 hurdles.  Jacoby stumbled a bit at that point and Gonzalez sprinted to the finish, getting a personal best of 59.67.

400m Hurdles Qualifying – Boys (top 3 and next 3 fastest advance to the semis)

It was a very easy run for Marlon Humphrey (Hoover, AL) in winning heat 1.  He strolled to an easy 52.01 win to automatically qualify for the semis.  Kenny Selmon (Pace Academy, Atlanta, GA) had an easy time of it as well, winning his heat in 52.03.  The fastest qualifier overall was Marvin Williams of Jamaica at 51.33.

100m Qualifying – Girls (top 2 and next 8 fastest advance to the semis)

Ariana Washington (Poly, Long Beach, CA) dispelled any rumors of injury with an easy win and the leading qualifier into the final.  She won her heat in 11.52   Ky Westbrook (Chandler, AZ) became the third fastest qualifier overall with her win, running 11.59.

Triple Jump Qualifying – Girls

Who would have thought that an American would be the second best qualifier in this event?  Keturah Orji (Mt. Olive, Flanders NJ), the US high school leader and New Balance National Outdoor triple jump champion, sailed to a #5 all-time performance, leaping 44-0.75 on her initial qualifying attempt.  A product of the NSAF’s Triple Jump project, her mark is the best American high school triple jump in six years.

Octathlon Shot Put

Gabe Moore continued to have a good meet, moving into 8th place with a 44-8.75 shot put performance for a total of 2295 points.  John Lint (Columbus Academy, Gahanna, OH) threw 42-2.75 giving him 2113 points after 3 events, and 19th place.

Octathlon 400m

Good runs by the Americans, with Moore clocking 49.60 and Lint at 49.66.  That moved Gabriel up to 5th with 3128 points and John into 16th with 2943 points.

Shot Put Final – Boys

Amir Ali Patterson (Crespi, Encino, CA) qualified for the 8 boy final on his third qualifying attempt, throwing 64-7.25.  He did not improve in the final and finished in 8th.  The Germans took 1-2 with big marks.  Patrick Muller won with a throw of 72-3, with Henning Prufer second in 71-11.75.

Javelin Qualifying – Girls

No Americans here, unfortunately.  The leader was Fabienne Schonig of Germany with a best of 171-1, followed by Reke Szilagyi of Hungary who threw 168-4.  The 12th qualifier for the final threw 161-4.  The winner of the US trials, Emma Fitzgerald threw 167-10 and second was Karen Bulger at 166-5.  Had they been selected to the team with those performances, they would have been the 5th and 7th best qualifiers.

2000m Steeplechase Qualifying – Boys

Bailey Roth (Coronado, Colorado Springs, CO) ran the race of his life.  He needed to be in the top 3 of his heat or be one of the three fastest non-qualifiers in order to advance to the final.  He kept the leaders within reach for nearly the entire race, passing 800m at 2:13 and 1600m at 4:31.  With a lap to go, it appeared that he would run sub-5:40.  But he faltered with 50 meters to go, still running 5:45.20, #2 all-time for a high schooler.  He was easily the fastest time qualifier. He broke the junior class record set by Jeff Hess of South Eugene, OR in 1978 (5:47.0).

800m Qualifying – Boys (top 4 and next 4 fastest advance to the finals)

Robert Ford (Johnson, San Antonio, TX), the sole American entrant, was second at 400m in about 53.5.  He was passed with 200m to go and managed to hang on for 7th, running 1:53.61.  Had he been in one of the other, slower heats, he would have qualified automatically as one of the top 4 autos (maybe!).

Discus Throw Final – Girls

Lloydricia Cameron (Northwestern, Miami, FL) fouled on her first attempt in the final, then got a mark (143-8) in the second round that moved her into 8th.  She improved in the 3rd round to 148-10, moving into 7th and advancing to the 8 girl final.  An improvement to 149-2 in round 5 still kept her in 7th.   She did not improve in the final round and finished 7th.
