US High School Indoor Track - Week in Review- ​Jan 7, 2013

Lots of action on the indoor circuits this past weekend as several other states, including Texas and Louisianna started the season.  

Jim Spier summarizes the most notable results for us.  Watch for his Top 5 List to be posted shortly as well.


GIRLS

Mary Beth Sant (Valor Christian, Highlands Ranch, CO) increased her US lead in the 60m to 7.41A.  Caitland Smith (Pelham, AL) won the Icebreaker meet in Birmingham with 7.52.  Zainab Sanni (Smoky Hill, Aurora, CO) was second behind Sant in 7.52A, and Aaliyah Brown (Lincoln Way East, Frankfort, IL) won the Texas A+M meet in 7.55.  Those are the new top 4 in the 60m.

Deajah Stevens (Cardozo, Queens, NY) won the Hispanic Games 200m (24.38) and 400m (55.19), both US leads.  Aaliyah Brown took the Texas A+M 200 in 24.60.  Soph Emma Gallagher (Garden City, NY) was second to Stevens in the 400m at Hispanic, running 56.03.

At the NC Opener in Chapel Hill, soph Layla White (Cary, NC) took the US lead in the 500 over Maya Evans (Fike, Wilson, NC), 1:15.42 to 1:15.73.

A great early season 800m was won by soph Jazmine Fray (Kellenberg, Uniondale, NY) at Hispanic, winning in 2:10.96 over Emma Keenan (Gwynedd Mercy Academy, Gwynedd Valley, PA - 2:12.29) and Erica Johnson (St. Mary's-Bay View, East Providence, RI - 2:14.18).

2012 New Balance Nationals Indoor 2 mile champ Carmen Carlos (Mc Gill-Toolen, Mobile, AL) won the 1600m at the Icebreaker meet in a US #2 4:52.44m.  Sarah Disanza (High Point, Sussex, NJ) got an automatic Millrose Games bid with her 4:57.97 Hispanic Games mile victory.

Maddy Berkson (Classical, Providence, RI) led two under 10:00 minutes for the 3000m at the Hispanic Games, running  9:53.75 to 9:57.17 for soph Bella Burda (Arlington, La Grangeville, NY).

The Frazier sisters put on a show at the NC Opener, running 1-2 and becoming #2-3 US in the 3200m, with Wesley (Ravenscroft, Raleigh, NC) at 10:26.63m and Ryen at 10:34.05.

Kendell Williams (Kell, Marietta, GA) had a sensational opener at the Ed Temple meet  at Tennessee State, winning the 55m hurdles in 7.93 (US #1), = #2 in the high jump (5-8) and #2 in the long jump (19-9)!  Akayla Anderson (Cardozo, Queens) won Hispanic in 8.03, US #3.

Defending NBNI 60m hurdles champ Dior Hall (Washington, Denver, CO) opened in fine fashion in Colorado, running 8.46 for 60m hurdles (about 7.76 for 55m hurdles).  Skylar Ross-Ransom (Langham Creek, Houston, CO) won the Texas A+M meet in 8.66, with Texan Alexis Duncan a close second in 8.68.

Medgar Evers (Brooklyn, NY) won the Hispanic Games 4x200m in 1:41.75 (US #2) and Port Richmond, Staten Island, NY) won that meet's 4x400m in 3:57.42 (US #3).  Lenape, NJ took the US lead at the same meet in the 4x800, running 9:24.62.

Shelly Spires (St. Paul's Episcopal, Mobile, AL) jumped 5-8.25 at the Icebreaker meet to become #1 in that event.  Paetyn Revell (De Soto, TX) became the first of the year to eclipse 40 feet in the triple jump, taking the Texas A+M meet at 40-1.5.

US leader Antonella Taylor (Bowie, MD) won the Southern Maryland shot put with a toss of 45-0.5, a bit off her US lead of 46-4.25.  At Texas A+M, junior Haley Teel (Gregory-Portland, Gregory, TX) edged soph Meia Gordon (Cypress Creek, Houston, TX), 43-10.75 to 43-7.25.

BOYS

The sprinters finally came alive.  Junior Chris Lewis (Lakeside, Sibley, LA) took the LSU 55m in a fast 6.35.  It was soph Marcus Taylor (Highland Springs, VA) winning the Southeastern Inv in 6.43, and junior Jahmaal Daniel (Terry Sanford, Fayetteville, NC) taking the NC Opener in the same time.

Cameron Burrell (Ridge Point, Missouri City, TX) ran a fast 6.77 60m at the Texas A+M meet , with Brandon Hill (Harker Heights, TX) second in 6.88.

Elijah Hall-Thompson (Morton Ranch, Katy, TX) exploded to 21.44 for 200m at the Texas A+M meet, with Darius Watkins (Grovetown, GA) second in 21.82.  Michael Cherry (Oscar Smith, Chesapeake, VA) won Hispanic at 21.83.

A fast 400m at Hispanic saw four athletes running 48.75 or better.  Cherry won that event in 48.08, with Ayo Obadare (Elmont, NY) second in 48.49 and Malik Jones (Roman Catholic , Philadelphia, PA) third in 48.68.

Brothers Isaac and Jacob Clark (Pleasantville, NJ) ran terrific 800s at the Hispanic Games, running 1:52.48 and 1:52.55, respectively.

Sean Mc Gorty (Chantilly, VA), after an outstanding cross-country season, blasted a 9:07.50 3200m at the Southern Maryland meet.

Jordan Martin (Bishop Mc Namara, Forestville, MD) won the Hispanic 55m hurdles in 7.46, and Devin Field (De Soto, TX) graduating a few weeks, won the Texas A+M 60m hurdles in 8.01, US #2.

Mt. St. Michael (Bronx, NY) took US #2 in the 4x200 at the Hispanic Games, running 1:30.56.  Cheltenham (Wyncote, PA) was second in 1:30.79.

Elmont, NY, Newburgh, NY and Penn Wood (Lansdowne, PA) took 1-2-3 at the Hispanic Games 4x400 with Elmont at 3:21.12, Newburgh at 3:21.74, and Penn Wood at 3:22.83.  They became 1-2-3 U.S. as well.

Junior Steven Dunbar (Tallwood, Virginia Beach, VA) got the co-US lead in the high jump, clearing 6-9 at the CNU Showcase in Virginia.

A great pole vault at the LSU meet saw junior Devin King (Sumner, Kentwood, LA) win with a US #1 16-06.5.  Second was Dalton Duvio (Curtis, River Ridge, LA) at 16-0 and  third was Caleb Bertrand (Elton, LA) at the same height.  Daven Murphree (Big Sandy, TX) won the Texas A+M meet with a US #2 16-0.75.

Andre Jefferson, son of former U of Arkansas All-American Tyrus Jefferson, won the long jump at Texas A+M with a leap of 24-8.5.  He had 3 jumps over 24-2.

Braheme Days (Bridgeton, NJ) got a big heave in the shot at the South Jersey meet, throwing 67-4.75.  Jon Beyle (East Chapel Hill, NC) won the NC opener at 61-6.75.  Those are the only 60-footers thus far.
